tacoman Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 hello everyone, you might notice this is my first post. i just wanted to say that i really enjoy this site and all the great info that i've found here you people are awesome. i'm stuck between the mbr844c and the mbr783c. i haven't really fished alot with a 7 ft'r and i have a bps woo daves 6'6" worm rod that is my favorite at the moment. i really like the 6 and 1/2 ftr but i have heard alot good things about the 7 ftr. any suggestions? thanks Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 13, 2007 Super User Posted January 13, 2007 Welcome Aboard! If I could pick just one rod it would be the MBR844C. Mine's a GLX saddled up with a Shimano CTE200GT. Quote
Hot n Tot Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 If I had to pick just one rod, it would be the MBR783 in GLX! But you'll probably end up with both, because you will need the 844 (or equivalent St. Croix) for frogging. Quote
Super User flechero Posted January 13, 2007 Super User Posted January 13, 2007 The 844 and 783 are way different... did you mean to list the 3 power in 6'6"? I could see if you asked about the 784 and 844 or if you asked about the 783 and 843. The difference in 6'6" and 7' is preference... I used the MBR784 for about 12 years as my worm rod. I tried many others and even sold the 784 and went to some 6'10" and 7' rods over the last year and a half... now I have another 784 blank that I'm about to build up for my worm rod... Many people could write exactly what I did but reversing the 6'6" and 7'. I also owned the 783 (very briefly) and sold it... didn't like it, it fished too light (in power) and I only used it for drop shot and small crank & stick baits. There is a HUGE difference between the 783 and 784, much bigger than the gap between those two than in any other loomis rods. However, the 783 is very popular worm rod here which just further illustrates the preference aspect of this. You really should take your reel down the the retailer and put it on both rods and let someone hold the line while you apply pressure to see how they FEEL TO YOU. Quote
Al Wolbach Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 The MBR844C in GLX is my favorite rod period but I have never fished the 783..........Al Quote

Fishing Doug Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 I own the 783 and fished with my buddy's 844 a lot this year. Originally bought the 783 for my spinnerbait rod but have found it a little on the soft side for bigger (1/2 oz and up) spinnerbaits. I ended up using the 844 a lot for spinnerbaits-much stiffer and the 6 inches makes a significant difference in slinging a bait where accuracy is not as much of a concern (IMO). With that said, the 783 is still one of my favorite rods-use it more for finesse and topwater applications now. conclusion-if I could only have one or the other, I would with the 844 simply because I think it is a more versatile rod. tacoman Posted January 13, 2007 Author Posted January 13, 2007 yeah i put the 783 but maybe i should have put 784. i guess my main question is. Is that 6" going to make that much difference. so far ive been told to go with the 7 ftr because of leverage on hook sets and such. i wanted somthing i could throw both worm and spinnerbait. thanks for all your replies. Super User Alpster Posted January 13, 2007 Super User Posted January 13, 2007 i wanted somthing i could throw both worm and spinnerbait. thanks for all your replies. I like a stiffer 7' rod for worms, but a little softer action for spinnerbaits, so I can feel the blades turning. You can certainly fish both with either of those rods. I now have or have had in the past, both rods in both power ratings. You just can't beat Loomis rods. JMHO Ronnie Quote
Super User flechero Posted January 13, 2007 Super User Posted January 13, 2007 Is that 6" going to make that much difference. Enough of a difference that many people own both rods and use them for completely different things. I'm sure a few people use them both for the same stuff but from what I have seen and heard most don't. I still think it's all preference but yes they "feel" pretty different. Quote
SCarter Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 I have the MBR844 in the IMX and love it. It is my primary t-rig outfit. Fat Fish Farmer has them at a good price. Quote
