Hey guys, thanks for all the help in my last couple of questions, really appreciate it. Looking to buy a new frog reel not sure what to get. I’ve liked all the Lews I’ve used so I was thinking maybe bb1. I’ve used a tatula 100hs for the last few years and it’s just about on its last legs. Thanks,

Pick whatever brand you like or find on sale.  Not really that much difference.

 

I would suggest you stay with a reel with an aluminum frame.  Composite frames are OK except when you put a large strain on them.  IMHO.

 

I don't like high speed reels to frog fish.  Lower gear ratios mean more power. I stay in 6 to 1 area.  Works for me.

 

I throw Lews Super Duty's.  Tanks of reels.

Current frog reel is a Curado 201E7.  Just received a BB1 Pro, but am going to use it on a rod that will see more action than my frog rod.  Fishing from shore almost always has me casting for long distance.  Something the BB1 Pro is supposed to be great at.

Shimano for a frog, 6:3 is fine although I could deal with a 7, a 5 is  too slow and an 8 not enough of a winch.  Other than that let your budget or what is available used nearby decide.

I’d recommend an 8:1 ratio on a dedicated frogging reel, spooled with 50# braid if you’re north of the 10# bass line.  65# if you’re south of it.

My current frog reel is a Fuego CT-XS - 8.1:1 - with 50# Sufix 832

I am currently using a BB1 Pro ironically. 
 

Have also used Tatulas in the past with good results, but I like the Lews drag system. It gives me good feedback regarding what’s happening when I’m really tugging on a fish that’s trying to bury itself in weeds.

Lew's Tournament MP is my frog reel. Love the front hook holder, has great line capacity, and 20 plus pounds of drag.

BB1 Pro would work just fine if you don’t mind the big frame. It doesn’t palm well enough to frog for me personally. I like to have a strong grip for those violent hooksets.

I'm using an older Quantum Accucast 7:1 metal frame and can lock down the drag.  60 lb braid.  With a 7'8" heavy rod it will cast as far as I want and bring in fish through pads.

The 7.5:1 gear ratio SHL combined with a 36mm tall spool has plenty of line pickup for frogs.

I have the latest version, and it's great for bombing heavier frogs with 50 lb braid, but won't do as well with lighter frogs, but not bad with those either. If you're concerned with frame size and plan to throw lighter frogs, the Tournament Pro does very well with them due to its much lighter spool. I've beaten the snot out of mine for nearly 4 years fishing very heavy veg and pads with straight braid and it's still going strong.
