Pat Brown Posted June 21, 2024 Author Posted June 21, 2024 Just now, NorthernBasser said: No kidding. The regular Launch Frog? Yes! The bigger ones walk the easiest to me - maybe you have a defective unit? Launch walks the easiest of all the scum frogs IMHO. Trophy takes some practice. Popper actually is probably the easiest - I lied. The smaller trophy is toughest to me. Small launch is a little tougher than the big launch but neither is hard for me. Try shortening one leg and making both legs shorter and with the scum frog stuff I find they like a 'tighter line' for the slack that you're popping than some other frogs which seem to like a big loose slack component to the wall the dog technique. The launch seems optimized for open water walking and the trophy seems geared more towards agitating fish in heavy cover but both are interchangeable in either role - just how id characterize them. Super User LrgmouthShad Posted June 21, 2024 Super User Posted June 21, 2024 Pat tells me he can get a trophy series frog to turn 180 degrees around while walking it. It blows my mind. This is what I mean when I say he’s way ahead of us 1 Quote
Pat Brown Posted June 21, 2024 Author Posted June 21, 2024 Wait til they see me do the 'chad shad chop ' with a frog. It really looks spectacularly good and the trophy is the best for it. And yes - I can make a trophy turn around and look the fish in the eye! It's cool! Trophy is also the best 'spitter' I've ever used. Try to exploit the head bob and walk it in place and get that mouth to snap and smack the water and then hang on to your butts. 😎👍🏼🎣 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted June 21, 2024 Global Moderator Posted June 21, 2024 I started with the original and it’s still my go to frog of them all. It’s gotten to the point where I can just spin that thing in place and when conditions are right get it to back up a few inches. The design of the one piece, short, flat tail Is unique. I tried the Launch and Trophy series and they are excellent also, but nothing like the original. Without watching it it’s hard to give you a specific reason why you can’t get it to walk. Kinda surprising Mike 1 Quote

The Launch Frog is best with short rod twitches - it's not really a walker but the straight-ahead head bob will still work well ... * Look up JT Kenney videos for the Launch frog as he had input on the design and how best to fish it. 1 Quote

I have a GoPro and eventually I'll upload a video demonstrating some of the finer points of walking these frogs but the launch walks extremely well and very easily. The trophy takes more work to dial in but can do more tricks once you get it rolling. You can walk any frog or popper or spook with the right amount of slack and the correct angle of twitch. It's tricky but keep practicing and you won't even think about it. The more difficult it is to get a frog to walk - the more unique the action = the more bites (IMHO). 2 Quote

As many of you know, I'm a big frog guy and thanks to @LrgmouthShad, I became privy to Scum Frog and was told they were second to none. I ordered a few to try in the usual colors and some I'd never tried like a toad color!!! They ended up being very effective and have caught me many fish in the shad colors - my confidence. The toad color hasn't gotten as much play and I tied on the small toad pattern launch frog and the weight in the back fell out of it and got lost. I contacted Scum Frog and they replaced the frog no questions asked. I was already a customer for life but this is above and beyond and deserves public commendation. They make a great frog and they stand by their product. I really like the scum frogs as well. The only thing I do to mine is take a pair of pliers and bend out the hooks a little bit to give me a better hook up ratio. It does however, make the frog come through cover slightly less efficient. 33oldtimer Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 Caught two nice bass last month on white Scum Frogs. Very pleased with them. 1 Quote
Bandersnatch Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 Have been an avid scrum launch frog user. While I like them I tried a snagproof Bobby’s perfect and will not go back to the scum frog. The Bobby’s perfect frog has the same hook up ratio as the launch frog but is far more durable given the difference in the canvas in the scum frog vs soft rubber on the snagproof Quote

Pat Brown Posted July 11, 2024 Author Posted July 11, 2024 @ChrisD46 I use the trophy series a ton and they are fantastic. The trophy series is more of a heavy cover frog and the launch is more of an open water frog. The XS is a great smaller profile frog that casts a mile. Awesome when they don't want as big of a bite. The trophy series popper takes this one step further and is the smallest profile in their line up and it works very very well. The 1/2 oz trophy is similar to the XS in size and gives you the head bobbing spit action of the 5/8 oz Trophy in a smaller package. I have caught well over thirty fish on a single shad launch frog and I have it tied on for a trip today. The last fish it caught was 6.5 lbs. Durability is not a problem with scum frogs. 1 Quote

Quick Scum Frog Hack : Apply light pressure with your fingers around the rear weight / frog plastic with your fingers so just enough to get a drop of super glue on both sides of the weight then release your fingers to get contact between the weight and frog plastic . Wait a couple of minutes before fishing the frog and you will not have the weight fall out any longer . 1 hour ago, Pat Brown said: @ChrisD46 I use the trophy series a ton and they are fantastic. Pat Brown Posted July 11, 2024 Author Posted July 11, 2024 @ChrisD46 I tend to think of it more like sometimes they just want a smaller profile - big fish sometimes key in on smaller bait fish or bugs/calmer conditions/clearer water etc. (happens on big lakes and small ponds as seasons change) and sometimes they want a bigger profile (heavy wind/darker skies/clouds/bigger baitfish in the area/dirtier water etc) I just try to keep an open mind and ask myself if a smaller profile or a bigger one is gonna get the bigger bite and watch the conditions. 2 Quote
