Sy_A Posted June 16, 2024 Posted June 16, 2024 Has anyone had any luck with yamatanukis? 2.5 vs 3.5? Favorite way to rig? And favorite color? Thanks! Quote
Solution RRocket Posted June 16, 2024 Solution Posted June 16, 2024 Yes, I've used these when I was throwing "poop baits" last year. I used the smallest size, weightless Texas rigged. Weightless because with just a hook they come in at a 1/4oz! I used light and dark colors...and pink. And they all seemed to work. I'd cast, let them sink. Then jerk, jerk, jerk to get them off the bottom...and allow them to sink again. Repeat. 1 Quote

I’ll give it a go and I’ll get the 2.5 as well I think since I’ve been favoring my spinning rods lately. Quote

Fishin_Forrest Posted June 16, 2024 Posted June 16, 2024 My lakes are very pressured and these things seem to be the best way to get bites lately. I use the 3.5", weightless Texas rig, with a 4/0 Ichikawa Muscle Wide Gap Offset Hook with a MF baitcaster. You can cast them d**n near like a lipless cb they are so dense. Cast to a weed edge and let them fall, give them a couple pops like you would a wacky worm. Only downside is they are not super durable. Fish tear them up. Try using a wacky tool to put an o-ring on the end were you hook into and that helps keep the neck intact for a few more fish. Favorite color is GP blue 1 Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted June 16, 2024 Super User Posted June 16, 2024 I like and use 2.5,3.5,4.25 After seeing too many get flung off went with this spring lock type hook works very well 4.25 with 5/0 1 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted June 17, 2024 Super User Posted June 17, 2024 I like the larger one. It sinks well and allows me to fish it deeper than expected. It pitches really well and skips great. A spring lock hook works best for me. FWIW, I run the small spring which will pull out. I modified several hooks with a larger spring and get a second rigging per bait. I took spike it pens and added chartreuse sides-and red throats to the baby bass. My bluegill imitator.👍 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 17, 2024 Global Moderator Posted June 17, 2024 They're great for flipping in cover when fish see lots of T-rig baits and jigs. I use the screw lock hooks also, and push a toothpick through the middle of the spring (perpendicular to the ends of the bait), to help hold it on even a little more. I just cut it off on each side of the bait. 2 Quote
OHBuckets Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 Last summer, when absolutely nothing else was working, I would save the session catching them with a small yamatanuki or a spinnut. Walking them early in the day, dragging/hopping them later. I need to put more time into the bigger versions - certainly can cast a mile. Quote

Super User FryDog62 Posted June 18, 2024 Super User Posted June 18, 2024 I found with the 2.5 too many smaller fish bit off the tip… much more than a Ned. There are some videos out there on how to rig the 3.5 so they get better hook penetration and resist tearing a little more. Apparently by the inventor. Basically hook it Texas rig style, but before you skin hook it, pull the eye of the hook down about a quarter inch inside the body of the fat end. Then the other end of the hook (point) is positioned at the furthest point down and just into the slot where the body gets slightly thinner. Quote
RRocket Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 The Imo Kamushi gets bit too! You can make your own by threading skirt strands into Cover Scat, Yamatanuki, etc Quote
PABASS Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 I have tried the smaller size and larger size, different colors in several bodies of water and no luck, using open hook and jig head and Texas rig, fishing like a wacky worm, jig and nail weight. I love the shimmy it has but I am not sure if its the extra size the fish don't like when they will eat a wacky worm with no issue. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 Sunnies peck the tail off in double quick time. They must be on the Yamamoto pro staff! 1 Quote
Sasquatch Posted June 19, 2024 Posted June 19, 2024 Have fished the 3.5 a couple times and caught fish when it’s tough. Forgot I had them until a buddy started throwing them the other day and started whacking them. Dug through the box found them and caught more in an hour than I had all morning. Quote
Sy_A Posted June 25, 2024 Author Posted June 25, 2024 Caught some largemouths on the 3.5 black/blue yamatanuki. Will try a screw lock ewg to make the baits last longer. 1 Quote
