Split shot rigging suggestions

I’m looking to try split shotting some plastics on an overnight kayak trip in a couple weeks. 
 

What are some suggestions for types and sizes of hooks for 3” curly tail grubs, 4” finesse worms and zman trd plastics? 
 

Also, any other lure recommendations for split shotting for river smallmouth would be appreciated?

Lead is banned in New York so I use a slip shot rig with either a tungsten or steel weight. I've tried a rubber band threaded in the weight, peg its or a toothpick and a weight with a swivel. That last one isn't a slip though come to think of it. What I decided works best is a bobber stop then a weight then another bobber stop or two. The weight depends on depth and current. I want it bouncing on the bottom. My favorite bait is a tie between a 4" ringworm or 5" finesse worm. Colors are green pumpkin or black. Hooks are Gamakatsu 1/0 ewg or 2/0 offset round bend.

That’s a good idea with two bobber stops and a slip weight.

I use #2 off set hook with 1/8 tungsten bullet weight with bobber stops.

It's actually called the Mojo rig and extremely effective in grass.

 

Many fisherman use cylinder weights, slides through grass better but I have a surplus of bullet weights so that's that.

I have been tying on a wet fly hook that I modify for jigging. It has a great lateral action for a river darter. I've often cleaned out a run with one.

The original split shot rig used 8# mono line #4 lead split shot with size #1 straight shank worm hook.

The trick is pinch on the round split shot then pull about 18” of mono so it cuts cuts a groove in the shot. Cut off the damaged line then move the split shot upper the line  and re pinch the shot so it stays put. Tie on the hook and you have the split shot rig.

Slip shot rig ; used a mojo cylinder 1/8 weight followed by a Carolina keeper for a weight stopper. I use a 8 mm glass faced bead in between the stopper and weight. Adjust the stopper beeeen 18” to 36” above the Owne #5133 size 1/0 or 2/0 depending on work diameter.

Mojo rig; pegged cylinder weight about 14” above the worm hook.

Split shot rig is good for smallmouth, unless in rivers/lakes with rocky snags. Then try a Free Rig with a cylinder weight. You might still lose some but not nearly as many 👍

I use a free rig if my bait is bouyant.

I've convinced myself I have better connection but I often lie to myself
