Daiwa Coastal 80/150???

Anyone own any of these?  Been looking for a lighter low pro reel to jig fluke and throw twitch baits at schoolie bass.  These look good and would work really well for FW bass too.  The price is considerably higher compared to a Taula 80 or 100 and I dont know if the slight upgrade in SW resistance is worth the it.  TYIA guys.

I haven't used the Coastal 80, but have had a couple 150 models. The main advantage they had over the Tatula sv when they were released was having some corrosion resistant bearings, but that's something the newer Tatula sv has gained now, so me personally would suggest saving the extra money and just getting the Tatula, especially when they're on sale at the moment at a lot of places.

Yeah, I think I kind of agree.  I like the 100mm handle on the 80 but I don't think its worth 150$ more.

The spool is deeper on the Coastal. So if you want an SV spool with greater capacity and a longer handle, the Coastal is it.

I have the Coastal. It's nice reel. I hate to say it I bought for two reasons... It's blue and I had some gift cards. 

 

So far no complaints. I use it for Texas rigged soft plastic. It casts well. It's pretty smooth on the retrieve.

 

It does have one odd thing. It squeals on the cast. I have worked on it and can't find what the real cause is. I know it's the braking system but it's the only Daiwa I have that does this. It almost sounds like a DC reel. In the end, it does't effect how the reel performs at all.

I’m certainly no expert on this or any other reel for that matter but I believe one of the selling points of this reel is the all aluminum body including both side plates if such a thing matters. @FishTank if im mistaken please correct me as I don’t own the reel and I’ll remove my comment.

I have used the Coastal 150 for 3 years, and have never had any issues with the reel.  Very solid, great drag, and casts well.  I use it in Salt water often, and haven't had any issues with corrosion.  I like this real better than my Tatula CT but I have no complaints with the Tatula.  I had a Coastal 200 that was my favorite, but I lost it over board.  Replaced it with a Tatula 150 and I prefer the Coastal 200 I lost, but both are excellent reels.  The Coastal reels held up well in salt water, but I don't fish the Tatula reels in the salt, so I can't say for certain, the extra money you pay for the coastal reels is worth it or not.  I only know the Coastal reels are worth the money I paid for them.

They also have a sealed drag.

I have two of the Coastal 150s and one of the Coastal 80s.  I fish inshore so I like what the Coastal series adds.  I really love the Coastal 80.  I use it for spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, smaller swimbaits, and crankbaits.

Sorry to hear about the 200 walking the plank, that's a tough 1.  I only know guy who has a few, but I only run into him at a spot we both fish 1 or maybe 2 times every year.  He says the same thing, he likes the 200 more than the 100 and I didn't get too far into it.  He had just bought a couple SC elites and an Extreme that he couldn't wait to show me, so the convo swung away from Daiwa.  He let me use the extreme for a while, which was cool, I never picked one up much less fished with 1.

  I think the 200 is essentially a Tatula and the 100 maybe too, but Im pretty sure the 80 is built on Alphas. 

At USDM retail paying a little more for a coastal is worth it all day, call me shallow but the castal blue looks sharp, also the 100mm is an upgrade IMO.  $ wise the Tat80 can be gotten for about 100$, but the coastals are almost always full retail, 250$ and there really isn't a JDM equivalent.  Tough call...

Thats what I was thinking.  I could run 14lb sniper or 15lb Invx and use it to pitch jigs and t rigs around moderate cover.  Just seems like a really versatile platform to me.

I saw a Coastal in Academy yesterday. It is a very blue reel. It seemed to be marked down considerably. iCast is coming soon. I think Daiwa is going to release a bunch of new stuff they just lowered the price of the Tatula SV TW 103.

Yeah...I wish the 80 would go on sale, but thats a fairlt new reel, not due for a redesign yet.
