My Shimano Symetre is about 12 years old and my Stradic FI is about 14 years. Both are going strong and feel almost like new. I sold a Stradic FH last year that was 15 years old. I got about the same price I payed for it. I also sold a Sustain FD years ago. It too was a solid reel. I also had a Saraha 500 or 750, can't remember.  I burnt this reel up bringing in a 40+ catfish.  The reel was toast but it did bring it in.

So I guess when they die or can't be maintained.

I currently have two Vanquishes and a Twin Power that I have purchased in recent years.  Both these reels are light years beyond anything else that I fished. Even though I have two Daiwa spinning reels I really like, I think Shimano has that special magic when it comes to spinning reels.

Depends on the model but that’s about the right time frame for most all of them. Which one are you looking at?

Ultegra.  Noticed the current model came out in 21 and wondering if it's going to be updated soon.  Thanks

4 years - '18 Stella followed by the variant models using the same design and different MOC

'22 Stella followed by newer variant models using the same design

While it may sound like planned obsolescence, Plat does show Shimano supports Stella parts going back to 2001.  So if you buy a worm-drive Shimano, you can always repair it with Stella parts.  This should make JDM Stradic look more desirable than Ultegra.

Also shows the makers are banking on N+1 hunger.

Doesn't the Ultegra have very similar/ same internal system as Stradic?  I don't know anything about internal mechanism of these reels but they sure looked similar in you tube videos.

Stradic FM

STRADIC FM | FRONT DRAG | SPINNING | REELS | PRODUCT | SHIMANO

Stradic FL

STRADIC FL | FRONT DRAG | SPINNING | REELS | PRODUCT | SHIMANO

Ultegra FC

ULTEGRA FC | FRONT DRAG | SPINNING | REELS | PRODUCT | SHIMANO

Latest Ultegra is a fine reel, but IMO you are better off spending a little bit more and get the latest Stradic FM unless you are concern about the weight and all.

A previous model but still new Stradic FL is on sale right now at TW for $179.97 and an Ultegra is priced at $159.99 - 179.99.

Just FYI, worm driven Shimano Bass spinning reel starts at Ultegra.

@Recurve1 Ultegra is Shimano's best locomotive drive reel.

Stradic is entry-level worm drive copying Stella design.

oops ----- yes, that's news to me.  Ultegra is worm drive.

I would have to chase spool numbers to figure what is different, but the gear support and pinion are different different

You can take it to the bank Stradic and Stella interchange parts, and '23 Stradic is $140 from Digitaka.

Thanks folks - I guess I don't understand what a locomotive and worm drive are.  When I look at the parts diagram for the Stradic and Ultegra they look similar - but the diagram for the Sahara is different.  I could use an education here, regardless of which reel I end up with.  Thanks again.

Also T2DM indicates both the Ultegra and Stradic are worm driven.

Signed confused!! LOL

I bought three sizes of Ci4 Stradic on clearance when they switched to the Vanford.  The worm drive oscillation and self contained AR were primary selling points. After servicing several new Shimano’s with the new AR assembly I won’t buy another one until they change it. If you don’t service your own reels then it’s no concern. Of course I service them for customers but they’re unnecessarily difficult to work on so this is my own little protest.

Worm drive:

In my experience Shimano locomotive driven spinning reels lays line more like a curve and uneven like this:

image.jpeg.148320ddaa3806e7e0928696e634b24e.jpeg

Compare to a worm driven reels like this:

Worn driven reels obviously offers more precise and controlled line lay than locomotive driven reels, I hope you get the idea and hope this helps you out.

I run ultegras. You can get them for right around $100 right now. They are great reels nice and smooth. They are great reels. The little bait monkey on my shoulder tells me to get the Stradic I have yet to cave in.

I can’t tell you all the specs. I can’t prove or disprove one is better than the other. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy either I can tell you that. I am just weird about having all my stuff relatively the same. That way everytime I pick something up I know exactly how it should feel and what to expect. So if I would get one stradic then I would want them all to be that. Which the bait monkey would love.
