Latest 'frogging' post got me wondering

if my old model Zillion 7'6" HF would work as a good frog rod.  Does it have a good tip for walking a frog?  Hasn't seen use in years as I never saw the need for a Heavy in PA.  My OG Tatula 7'4" HF was my dedicated frog rod but it got stolen.

 

I have two 6'10" HF, the Falcon Amistad (which  I'd rather use as a more all around rod) and an old (very) Cabela's XMLTiC 6'6" MHF whch carries the same lure rating as the Amistad.

Finally another person with this thought, i only have 1 H rod and really have no need for it.

Ive even used a Medium Black Max rod for frogging awhile ago, the way this state is any rod should work.

Everyone fishes differently, so my advice on that would be to put a reel on it and give it a try, your opinion on if it suits you will be worth more than anyone elses. Ive had a few rods that were supposed to be really good at something that just didnt work for me.

Retired to Florida last year.  Have a BB1 Pro on the way.  From what I've been reading, most consider this reel to cast very far.  However, I have several reels that hold plenty of line I could try.  However, I kind of like the idea of a faster retrieve to pick up line quicker.

 

In PA I didn't fish heavy cover so a MH was more than enough.  Mostly I used rods where the lure weight I was using was somewhere in the middle of the rod's rating.

I’d say just give it a try.   If you don’t like it then don’t use it again.      I used to use 7’11 and 7’6 rods to frog and then tried 7’ and I found that the 7’3 Heavy was the sweet spot for me.    But I’ve tried a lot

My first attempt at frogging was with the Tatula 7'4" HF that I shipped to Florida for my visits.  Got to use it for one vacation.  Then a drug addict B-I-L stole all my rods I kept there.

I have a 7' HF Abu Garcia rod I bought on clearance for $65 ... I only use it for frog fishing with #50 lb. to #65 lb. braid with a 7:1 bait cast reel . This same set up would also work for flipping heavy mats with a senko or creature bait .

Do they even have frog fishing in pa. I’m from there and it’s ridiculous how little grass fishing there is

We have the occasional frog, but doubt there are enough for frog fishing.  Which is why I decided to make my Tatula 7'4" HF a dedicated frog rod and shipped it to Florida.

Not to derail this, or let too much secret sauce out, but you didn't necessarily need huge grass mats or tons of frogs in the region to be successful frog fishing. They can look like many things to a bass and are just another topwater option that happens to be super weedless..

not sure what part of PA you’re talking about but western pa has plenty of grass and frog fishing.

You're absolutely right.  Doubt a bass ever thought "Oh boy.  A frog. Yummy!  Vitamins A, E, B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, & B12".  More like "Food?"
