As a rule, I don’t use swivel snaps, never really have. But these days, I’m tossing a lot of small finesse crankbaits from my kayak with BFS gear. The fish in these waters see a lot of full-sized offerings and these micro lures flat out get bit.

Most days I don’t have a problem tying and retying when I change out lures. However there have been times this year when I'm out in some fairly strong wind and waves. It’s a challenge and time consuming when I’m retying while bobbing like a cork on the water.

I’m starting to think about using a swivel snap on those days. The last time I did was years ago and I remember the snap opening up and losing a nice fish.

So I’m looking for input on a smaller - yet reliable - swivel snap that won’t open up on me when fighting larger fish. And hopefully as strong or stronger than the 7 lb test line I use.

TIA

I can answer this. But I don't use a swivel. Just a very high quality and ridiculously small (but strong) snap.

Ryugi R-Snapv size 0. This tiny thing is rated for 41lbs! It weighs .035 grams (1/1000th oz). A nice bonus is even if you don't close it properly, it's still "closed". That's image 2.

Have had ZERO failures. And have friends who use larger ones for real sized crankbaits also with no failures.

It's a quality piece.

Agree, no swivel, just a snap.  I use cross locks, make sure they strength rating is adequate.  Most are for BFS.

I tried these years ago. The ones I got in size 1 and 2 pulled open really easily. Only use them with 4lb line now for ultralight fishing

UL fishing is what I do most of the time.  My everyday set-up is with 4lb line.

I have used these with no issues but I haven't tried anything else for BFS lures.  Some baits come without split rings and I use these instead.

Ok, so I received these in the mail - and tried for over 20 minutes to get them to open properly and then close/lock on a couple different lures - to no avail. I mangled the first one and had to cut it off with wire snips and the second I couldn’t close at all.

I consider myself to have reasonably good dexterity and motor skills but this was a bugger… any tips or tricks? Must be a simpler way ??

Ok. I understand. They work a bit differently. You TWIST them.

Hold the clip between you thumb and index fingers, small eye in left hand, large eye in right hand. The clip part should be at the top.

Now simultaneously twist your right hand TOWARDS you and your LEFT hand away from you. It will snap open and catch. Then you just release like a normal snap. Seems complimented..but once you do it once, you'll be Ah-ha!

Watch this video. He demonstrates. If you struggle still, I'll get the wife to record me.
