SPF light fishing pants?

This came up a couple months ago but for the life of me I cant find it.

 

Anyone have recommendations for very light weight SPF rated fishing pants? Bonus points if they are convertible?

 

Preferably ones that dont make me look like MC Hammer

I'm a fan of the Columbia's PFG Blood & Guts Pants.

Light, comfy, quick drying and seem fairly durable.

They are 'convertible' but I rarely use it.

Not sure if the model I have is still available.

Some on the newest deals have 'no fly'.

So if you're not an 'over the top' kind of guy, you might not be a fan.

I have been using a pair from Duluth Trading Company, Dry on the Fly. They are not convertible but get the job done. 

 

The best convertible pants I have owned are from Kuhl. I have gotten old and put on a few pounds but years ago these were all I would wear to fish in. They wear like iron.

Columbia convertible.  Looks like they are now called Silver Ridge.  Comfortable,  great pockets, last forever, dry fast....

   I still have some that are probably 8 or 10 years old.  I have tried others (read : cheaper), but none have compared well to Columbia.

I've gone to wrangler ATG pants for anytime I'm not wearing jeans but want long pants.  I buy fleece lined for cold months and unlined for regular wear.  I wear them to the store, to the woods, and around the house.  The zipped pockets are nice insurance.  No zip off but they are comfortable as heck.  And they do have a fly if you're a 'through the hole' kinda guy.  They aren't as light as the flyweight columbias and similar, but I like them better.  I have converible columbias and they were my wet wading pants for a long time.  The drawstring tie isn't it for me anymore.

I went to Amazon and got some waterproof, convertible hiking pants by Gash Hao for $38.

 

Yes - some unknown Chinese company. But I think these are great and they are lightweight. I ended up buying a second pair.

I have Columbia PFG Blood and Guts and Silver Ridge standard and convertibles. I prefer the Silver Ridge because of the ample cargo pockets. One's zippered and the other is Velcro closure. Cool grey is great for high sun days, but it's hard to find. Anyway, both dry out super fast in a light breeze.

The Columbia seem to be a fan favorite. Still have one or 2 to look up suggested here. 

 

Anyone try these pants?  Not trying to cheap out,  I want these to last a few seasons but $40 to $90 is a few jerbaits I need to replace.

I fish with a wide brimmed Tilley hat... other than that, its a pair of khakis and a long sleeved cotton/poly sport shirt... both of which will double to mow the lawn in.  I think the rest of you are a group of "pansies" needing "special clothes" to catch bass in.

What an ignorant comment.

 

You don't wear gear with an UPF rating because you're a "pansie". You do it to mitigate the ability of the sun to go through the pores in clothes and damage the skin.

 

Skin cancer isn't pretty. How do I know? My dad is dying from it. Wore an original Tilley (not UPF rated). Skin cancer on his head. 

 

I wish I was joking. I'm not.

 

If anyone wants a gut punch of reality, I'll post details/pictures. I've been keeping a photo journal. It ain't pretty.

 

So please, people. Mitigate the sun damage by wearing UPF rated clothes, wear sunscreen, be smart.

ATG's are the 'ish. Pretty much all I wear as well. Comfy, durable, relatively inexpensive, and available everywhere. Target, Walmart, Goodwill...

I didn't get the convertible ones but they do make them. This review is for the regular ones. Magellan hickory canyon stretch cargo pants. $30 but sometimes on sale for less...

And Amazon.  Put your size in all of the colors in your 'saved for later'.  they fluctuate in price a LOT because amazon scrapes prices from elsewhere on the web.  So when they go on sale on another site, Amazon will drop.  I've gotten them for $22-24 before.  The only ones I've never seen drop are the camo.

 

If you haven't tried the fleece lined ones, you need a pair.  When its 30 degrees and blowing that's all I throw on to do most anything aside from sit in a tree.

That's what I wear.  But mine are the convertible ones.  I've never actually converted them and don't ever plan to, but I think they were on sale and cheaper than the regular ones at the time, or something.  Or else, I don't know why I would have bought them. 

 

Either way, they're perfectly fine pants.  The fit isn't great, but very few pants fit me well anyway.  And since these are sized S, M, L, XL, etc. they're not really gonna fit you well unless you're lucky.  But with the elastic wasteband and belt loops, the fit doesn't need to be great to "fit".  They're comfortable.  And yeah, pockets are good.  Material seems to be pretty durable, as I've probably worn and washed them close to 100 times now and they're still holding on.   

 

No real complaints.  But in 2024, I wouldn't expect any brand of clothes to be all that much different from any other brand of clothes.

Either Basspro or Academy zip off for kayak fishing and wet wading.  Same for shirts, all long sleeves.  Columbias are nice but I'm on a fixed income.

I wear nothing but Columbia PFG, most of which I have purchased at incredible prices at the Columbia Outlets in the Tanger Outlet Malls.
