Dontrelle Willis.   I suspect most of y'all have never heard of him.  He was a major league baseball pitcher for a few years.   His pitching was excellent at times, but sometime erratic.  (just like my fishing).  The main reason I picked him is regardless of what was happening in the game he always had a BIG smile of his face, and looked like he was having the time of his life.   That's me fishing.

My career required participating in real Life & Death deals almost on the daily.

No question these men & women work hard to perfect their rare God Given athletic ability,

but they are still playing a game, regardless of the press coverage

and the misguided pedestal they get placed on. 

Their efforts often offer us a welcome distraction from the reality of our life's,

however, there's usually very little there to emulate in my mind.

Being able to pass, punt & throw is not an indicator of good character. 

Isn't it funny how "Being a Good Man or Woman" just doesn't mean that much any more.

Unless one isn't.

Andy, I used career in a bass fishing context. Can this be done? Well, here's the meaning of career:

 

"an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's life and with opportunities for progress."

 

And here's the secondary meaning of occupation:

 

"any activity on which time is spent by a person"

 

I invited the guys to play, to be goofy, and self-deprecate. They did.

I won’t ride on the coattails of Sasquatch so I’ll say not a sports figure but a sport franchise. I’m the Detroit Lions for every year of their existence it seems like with the exception of last season. They try and try, make countless changes with no positive luck! 😁

Rock Clunn comes to mind as a bass angler with similar appreciation to keeping in touch with our surrounding environment  on the water. Any success Catching those green fish was a result staying focused on what is going on and listening to our intuition.
