jbmaine Posted May 25, 2024 Posted May 25, 2024 Hi all, As the title says, my 2020 Edge is showing "AWD malfunction service required" warning. Looks like the all wheel drive has defaulted to just front wheel drive because of it. I've got a appointment at the garage next week but, in the mean time, can anyone steer me to what I might look at to find the problem and or fix it on my own? I'd appreciate any suggestions. spartyon8 Posted May 25, 2024 Posted May 25, 2024 Did you possibly run over anything or hit any big potholes? I have heard of people with AWD errors on other vehicles that had a simple sensor wire that was unplugged or knocked loose. I would take a peek under the car and around each wheel and see if there is a wire dangling and/or all sensor connections are tight before tearing into anything. On these newer cars, sensors are abundant and can cause quite a few headaches. Quote
Super User Bird Posted May 26, 2024 Super User Posted May 26, 2024 The actuator motor is my guess. Do you hear any noise in the differential ? Quote
jbmaine Posted May 26, 2024 Author Posted May 26, 2024 No noise and no loose wires. It might still be under the drive train warranty. Car is less than 5 years old with only 14000+ miles on it. Have an appointment on Tues. Thanks for the replies and the suggestions. Quote
Jmilburn76 Posted May 29, 2024 Posted May 29, 2024 Probably the transfer case(PTU). Ford engineers really messed up by putting it right beside the exhaust which ruins the gear oil in it causing failures. There is a video on YouTube showing how to drill, tap and add a drain plug to be able to service the unit to keep it from failing. Quote
jbmaine Posted May 29, 2024 Author Posted May 29, 2024 I found out that the AWD malfunction is covered under warranty so that's a good thing. Parts on order. 41 minutes ago, Jmilburn76 said: Ford engineers really messed up by putting it right beside the exhaust which ruins the gear oil in it causing failures. I have my own pet peeve about Ford engineering. Our Edge has the tow package and they managed to put the plug for trailer wiring directly under the hands free assisted lift gate (back hatch) sensor. Which means more often than not when I'm plugging my trailer lights in I activate the lift gate, usually hitting me on the way up. This Idea definitely came from the " Yesterday I couldn't spell engineer, today I are one" school of engineering. 1 Quote
