JackstrawIII Posted May 23, 2024 Posted May 23, 2024 Hey all, I have been using the 7’1 Tatula HF jig rod for frogs and toads, which I throw often. I really like it, except that I wish the handle was longer. I like the mix of power and casting distance I get with this rod, but I’m really tall and have long arms and I find that my wrist gets sore fighting fish on this rod after a good days fishing, because I can’t anchor the rod against my side or under the crook of my elbow. Couple questions: 1. Is there a simple way to make the handle several inches longer? 2. If not, is there a rod that is similar to this but with a longer handle? I’m not really interested in super long rods at this point, but would love to know what’s out there. Thanks! Quote
djhands Posted May 23, 2024 Posted May 23, 2024 I have a 6th sense esp 7'3" extra heavy fast. Works amazing for frogs also has a longer than normal handle Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted May 23, 2024 Super User Posted May 23, 2024 1- No, not unless you're going to take the handle apart down to the blank. A rod builder could extend it for you onto a tube. I don't know of an aftermarket piece. You could maybe get 1" from a big surf rod butt cap that slips over yours. Or a cane/walker rubber cap. But I don't think that's what you're looking for. 2- you're already at 14 1/2" which is pretty standard for a nominal 7'-ish rod. how much longer do you want in the butt? Quote

Another 3-4” would be awesome. 2 hours ago, djhands said: I have a 6th sense esp 7'3" extra heavy fast. I found a broken rod that I'm going to cut and splice into the butt to make it longer. Wish me luck. Quote

So if you're going to insert a piece inside the bottom of the current rod, you need to make sure its a snug fit diameter to diameter. You'll also want to wrap the existing rod with thread and epoxy it to give is hoop strength. Think of it like a ferrule on a two piece rod. The better way to do it if you can is to have a tube that you can insert the current rod butt into. Then you can shim the rod with mashing tape or equivalent to have a tight fit. Then rod epoxy it in place. In either case I don't see you putting a lot of force on the joint because you're mostly using it to brace against your body. you're still using the reel seat as the main point of force. Just be careful winching in a fish loaded up with a mat of grass that you don't burry the butt into your belly. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 7, 2024 Super User Posted June 7, 2024 I use a Megabass Valkyrie 7'1'' Heavy for most frogs. It has an extendable handle. It's great if you really want to two hand bomb cast a lure. 1 Quote
