Putting together a do it all baitcasting combo geared towards casting distance....what reel would you go with? Daiwa Tatula Elite? Let's BB1 Pro? Something else?  If it matters rod is a Kistler Z Bone 7'6" mh/f. I normally throw baits in the 1/2 oz range.

If you're going with braid mainline and that weight, the latest BB1 pro wins for laying into the cast to air it out. Mine's on an ARK essence 7'6" MHF and max distance is impressive and pretty effortless. Its tall spool plays well here. It's also the smoothest Lew's I've handled.

With braid mainline, the Elite can be touchy in the beginning of a power cast unless you can learn to regulate your stroke. Figure that out and it'll do fine. If you're going with plastic mainline, the Elite has the edge, IMO. Mag Z plays well with it after the apex of the cast where you'll need to be more mindful of a fluff up with the BB1.

How far do you consider 'casting distance'?  That means different things to different people.  My SV/TW and all of my SVS/MGL setups will do 45-50 yards no problem with a 1/2 oz plug.  I was doing yesterday morning with a 1/2 oz sexy dawg on my 6'10" Head turner and 16 lb supernatural.  Similarly the previous generation (Gen 4) Abu garcia STS will do the same with braid and a 1/2 oz red eye shad.  If you're looking for longer casts than that, then the BB1 is probably it.  Another that I'd throw out there is a tuned round reel like an Abu Amassador or a Calcutta.  A 1/2 oz might not be quite enough for the benefit but those round reels can really sing line.

(Disclaimer) Daiwa and Shimano are my favorite reel companies. Rods too.

I like Lews rods and reels but ill go for my Daiwa/Shimanos 90% of the time.

I also dont have an Elite, but have many other Tatulas and did some research on the Elite.

With all that being said go for the BB1 Pro.

Ive got 2 and shouldve bought more when they were on sale.

Doesnt matter what bait/lure i have tied on or what rod its on, the casting distance is amazing.

Its one of the longest casting reels on the market (in a low profile reel thats stock).

The braking system on the BB1 Pro is one of the best ive used, i only used 10-12lb YZH line and its so easy to cast far without the line fluffing or backlashing. So many adjustments you can really fine tune it to where its the perfect balance between distance and ease of casting.

Such a smooth reel, looks really great too. Its meant for deep cranking, thats what i use mine for.

Deep cranking requires you to cast as far as possible, more than any other reel to get that lure down as deep as possible. But it excels for any lure where distance is required. Theres no reel i would want for that job more than this.

The way I see it, for casting distance, a reel needs to have all braking set as low as possible without becoming overly difficult not to backlash.   That's it.

It's a question of what company makes the best braking design.  That is without debate Diawa.  To me, the plain old Tatula casting distance is tough to beat.  If that ain't get'n it done, take a look at rod, lure, line, and technique.

There are a couple of new in box SS SVs on Yahoo Auctions right now, one of them is $140 and the other $220.  This is the poor man's Steez, essentially a Steez without the T-Wing.  Pair it with a 1016 SV G1 and you're off to the races.  Many don't associate the SV spools with being a distance spool, but there is more to the equation.  The SS SV uses weaker magnets and both the 1012 SV G1 and 1016 SV G1 are very fast and capable of good distance in that particular reel.  Both of those spools are also very light at 9 grams, so the reel will be well capable of throwing 3g if you want to dip your toe in that end of the pool as well.

for great distance, definitely go with a 7'5 or 7'6 rod.

I have been upgrading all my rods over the last few years to this length and I notice a big difference in casting distance over 6'6 and 7' rods.

I use 12 pound mono (Sufix Siege) on my 7'6 MH baitcasting setup
