Where do you guys buy your mono? Specifically trilene xl and big game. I’m sick of buying from difks sporting goods or Walmart where the date on the spool is 2-3 years old

Local shops, Tackle Warehouse, Bait WRX, Midway, Omnia, DSG, BPS/Cabelas.

Ive got line from 3-4 years ago thats still good, as long as it was kept out of the sun/heat while being stored its like new. Being on a shelf or in the back of a warehouse for most of its life those should still be good.

 

Also for Big Game, that line will live forever. 3 years is nothing for that.

It doesn't matter what store it is, it will sit in Pure Fishing's warehouse until someone places an order so who knows how old it is.

 

It should be fine though. As long as it stays dry, out of the sun and not exposed to temperature extremes, it will last a long time on the shelf.

Go to J&H in Oakdale where you can pick it out yourself. They sell line like crazy, so you'll probably find fresh stock. Same with Causeway in Merrick on Merrick Road just south of Twins and just east of Mill Pond.

J&h had 12lb big game last time I was there from 2017 lol

They also sell used things they say are “new” and have awful customer service. They’ll never see another penny from me

In my youth I never changed line unless it got too low on the spool.  Still don't.  Landed a 35 pound carp on 8# XL that had been on the reel for several years.

Berkley Big Game is extremely popular down here for both fresh & saltwater & seldom sits on the shelf long. I might have to visit 2 or 3 to find a spool.

 

Academy, Dick's, Bowie Outfitters, & others over price their line. I pay just under $8 a spool.

Amazon. If I am ordering from TW and need line I’ll grab it but otherwise Amazon next day prime shipping and it’s as cheap as anywhere usually.

I buy Big Game at Walmart Mart, along with Trilene XL for lighter lines. I rarely have any problems.

I get my big game from Walmart….although I got a combo from Bass Pro in Jan, they spooled it with their “house brand”

Excel. It looked and acted like Berkeley Big Game. 
might try some on a few more rigs.

I've never had an issue buying Big Game from Walmart, but if I have gift cards I will get it from Bass Pro.

I reeled in a nice LM and several large carp with 4 lb Shakespeare mono that sat in my shed and then my boat for a total of about a decade. There is no expiration 

 

my buddy hauled in a 20 lb striper with his dads spinning rod that had been sitting idly since the 70s, he didn’t put fresh line on it 😂

like most, i think you're worrying over nothing.  although my understanding is mono deteriorates in sun...  i'd worry about that stuff AFTER it's on your reel, and you been fishing with it......in the sun. idk how often people replace their fishing lines though - yearly, every other year... whatever.  that would probably be for exposure to elements and abrasion and all..........

I absolutely love mono. I flip fish on mono without worrying about it breaking off. Even 4# mono. Yesterday I flipped an 18" Smallmouth on 10# cheap Omniflex mono. I hadn't got around to putting Big Game on that reel yet, but still wasn't worried.

Once I reached my mid teens, I switched to 4# XL.  I believe my best fish with it was a 10# carp.

I caught a 28" channel catfish yesterday on a little cheap spinning reel with 8# mono. I don't know what it weighed but it was more than 8#. My arm was about to fall off from holding it up. And I didn't have a net so had to drag him in. I was fishing for panfish with a 1/16 oz beetlespin. Like I said: I love monofilament

I love Sufix Siege mono its by far the best I've ever used

 

but its not available everywhere

I like that stuff too for mono.  Sufix Advance isn't bad either.  Its what they call "advanced mono."  They claim it has 50% less stretch than traditional mono and more abrasive resistance.  I don't have enough real world experience to back that up though.
