New Fangled Gas cans 😡

Somebody ( A family member), took my old gas can that I used to fill my lawn mower up with. My grandson had a new can that he uses for his 4 wheeler and dirt bike. I asked him if I could get a tank full of gas for the mower . He said that’s fine. But I like to never got the gas to come out of it for the device that hinders the flow for some reason.

So I was looking for the old style gas can that actually works and thought I had found one at a gas station and bought it.

I go to fill up my mower , and after pushing , pulling etc, could never get any gas to come out of it…😡 . I got so frustrated I considered breaking the whole thing off., but it’s probably connected inside the spout somehow. I finally just took the whole spout off and poured it directly out of the big hole , spilling some of the gas…😡😡

I am fairly mechanical but … why on earth do they make spouts like this?? I suspect it has something to do with not spilling gas, but I spilt far less with the old cans.

Yep, them new gas cans are trash.

 

I swapped out all mine with this kit...you can find at Menards and Amazon.   Much better!!

Mike, I agree the new style cans are a pain. My neighbor bought one and ended up throwing it out. He found an older one at a yard sale. I won't buy one myself.

I used a kit like @DaubsNU1 to fix the issue.  Good as old.

It was mandated by federal law that the newer style gas cans come with that specific style spout years ago.  Can't say I care for it either, but as has already been stated, you can avoid the problem with a kit.

 

Or just find an older style one and hang on to it as long as possible lol

I have a 3 gallon older plastic that works fine.  I have a 1 gallon with the new fangled nozzle that works better.  Once you get the trick for how a given nozzle works the one I have is slick.  I can hold the can upside down and not spill while I get the nozzle into my chainsaw, blower, etc.  Then pull the release a little and it fills the tiny tank slow.  Simple as.

We take portable fuel cells to Michigan because we are on an island and unless you want to pay out the nose for marina gas, we would have to load the boats back on the trailers and take the ferry back across to go to a gas station.  We have done the old style 5 gallon plastic cells, the new style plastic cells and since both styles suck to try and fill while inside the boat, I have settled on a 14 gallon portable that I put in the back of my truck, fill before we get on the ferry, wheel it out on the dock and use a battery powered transfer pump to fill the boat.  Even the guys who use the 5 gallon cells use a pump.  If I had need for that much fuel usage at home I would use the cell but I don’t so it gets emptied out after the trip and stored until the next year.

The new ones are awful, I’m told internet has the old style like everyone else has posted. Theres always the funnel option if you just take the California nozzle off

I like the instructional videos where you unscrew the new nozzle and throw it as far as you can.  I bought old type nozzles from Amazon, but haven't drilled air vents yet, so they're not great either.  Saw a guy on the utube who zip-tied the new nozzle open and that looks like a winner to me

I've got a new style for my mower that you click a button, then tip it upside down and push down to fill like a racecar pitstop. Then when you lift it up the nozzle closes automatically. Maybe not ideal for every situation but it works great.

I completely understand the frustration.

As mentioned, got the kits and drilled the vents in all my gas cans.

I bypassed the issue by picking up a battery powered liquid transfer pump at harbor freight. Worked so well I grabbed a couple more. Now the gas can stays on the ground and I fill things up with a switch. It was in the $ 10-15 range as I recall.

DaubNU1 called it. When I buy a new can, I also pick up replace spout/vent kit. Very little angers me like spending 10 minutes with a 6 gallon tank at shoulder height putting diesel in our tractors.

I Office Spaced my safety top that looks like below. I'd be better off blind folded with no nozzle than with this thing. I've spilt so much gas I think the EPA is going to require remediation when I sell my house. Worst invention ever...even when you manage to hit the safety and push the nozel for gas it spills out of the joint. 

 

This nozzle is great. I use it for my yard equipment like leaf blowers and weed eaters. Makes filling small quantities in tight/awkward spaces easy and clean.

 

Everything else now gets the old school kit like above. First thing I do when I get a new gas can.

@Functional, I have that top one on my 2 cycle jug and I get gas all over my hands and the ground every time. I’m glad they came up with a way to prevent spillage by making it way worse 😂

@TnRiver46 I'm convinced its part of a big consumer conspiracy to create that problem so we spend more money and buy these nozzle kits. I wouldn't even blame and intern for designing that thing.

I figured up in my head a rough estimate.

If you take all those " new fangled " gas nozzles being used all across the nation.

That's roughly 10,000 gallons of gasoline being spilt on the ground and on garage floors....... daily 😳

I've got a newer 'can' with this push-button that seals it...not had any problems with spillage or leakage. I like it cause I put the end of the spout in the boat's tank, and it doesn't dispense until I push that button...with where the boat tank is, if I had an 'open end' can, it'd spill all over the carpet before I even got the nozzle of the can into the tank opening.

I have one looks almost same, and I hate it.  The green button is hard to push in and very hard to hold pushed in while pouring...I'm going to try the zip tie method

My Father has an older style one without the new spout.  I've told him several times I would like it if he ever wants to get rid of it.
