vantoo Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Hey guys, I need a little help with a Reel purchase and maybe a rod too. Am looking at the Pflueger president in a light spinning reel for crappie. Maybe 4 or 6 lb. test. Just got into crappie fishing and love it but all my tackle is to heavy. Never done it before cause I am mainly a bass fisher.......any suggestions appreciated..... Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted December 31, 2006 Super User Posted December 31, 2006 Wllly Marshall has good set ups for crappie. Look in bass pro shops catalog or on line. Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 For me, fishing for crappie means finding a brush pile and figuring out how deep the crappie are holding. I'd get an extra long pole (as long as 12 feet-2 piece) that would allow you to fish vertically, even in heavy cover. A lightweight president sounds like more than enough reel for the job. My crappie reel was pulled off an old Bill Dance $29.99 BPS special. Not much power, but you don't need much to pull in a crappie. Quote
Super User Marty Posted January 1, 2007 Super User Posted January 1, 2007 I don't have specific brand recommendations, but a reel that's on the smaller side and rated for line in that 4-6# range, along with a rod rated L or UL, in a length you prefer. I use 5 1/2' for my ultralight fishing, but I'd be equally happy with 6'. Quote
JT Bagwell Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 The Pflueger President is an excellent reel choice. I have several of them and the Pflueger Medalist and they are great. JT Bagwell Quote
Ron_C Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I use a a Wally Mashall WM 4020 spinning on a 11ft. graphite rod and a Pflueger President on an ultra lite 5 ft. rod. I use 6 lb. test on both. Great set up for crappie. Quote
vantoo Posted January 4, 2007 Author Posted January 4, 2007 thanks to all of you for the advice and input..... think I will go with the President and a lightweight rod... Quote
