Ryan N Posted May 9, 2024 Posted May 9, 2024 Fun time yesterday, I had some small talk with a fellow angler when he caught a pretty good-sized bass! I did the whole once over; Asking him what he was using, rod and reel, lures and technique and he seemed to mainly use glidebaits for catching fish, not only bass. I was hyping him up on his catch, helping him take photos and measurements, you know the deal. He decided to give me one of his glidebaits which shook me since he was just saying one of his lures is around 70 bucks, which I'd never buy, let alone throw where I'd lose it forever. Considering my confidence with natural color baits like bluegill, I'm incredibly thankful for him handing me this 60 dollar glidebait. This was my first-time hearing about glidebaits. I only know worms, crankbaits, swimbaits, spinners, etc. Have you guys fished with anything like this with success? 1 Quote
MediumMouthBass Posted May 9, 2024 Posted May 9, 2024 Glide baits catch big fish. So many different ways to work them, fast, slow, i like fishing them over swimbaits. Now swimbaits catch big bass too, but i have more fun fishing glides, experimenting with their movements in the water, the various different cadences. If you throw them just make sure your rod and reel can handle it, and make sure the lines a heavy lb test so you dont snap off when casting. And be prepared to catch alot of big bass, it just might take an hour or 2 of nothing and then BAM, the fight is on. 1 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted May 9, 2024 Super User Posted May 9, 2024 Glidebaits and hard swimbaits (one joint like the pic it's a glidebait, more than one joint it's a swimbait) are both bass catchers I use small swimbaits like this Bucca Baby Gill Swimbait - 3/4oz - $16 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 10, 2024 Super User Posted May 10, 2024 1st things first, what size is the lure and how much does it weigh?? 2nd thing does the lure float or sink slow? Everyone has there own technique retrieving a glide bait, did you new friend offer how he fishes the lure gifted to you? Use what the gift horse used. Tom Quote
Ryan N Posted May 10, 2024 Author Posted May 10, 2024 @WRB So the lure he gave me is a 2.5 oz and is the floating kind. He didn’t tell me how he fished this specific one but I saw him using his other glidebaits; Jerking or dragging rod tip pointed low, and picking up the slack in a very quick manner. I tried fishing it but my current rod is just too light. Luckily I ordered a medium heavy awhile ago so it should be a bit better once I have that one. Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 10, 2024 Super User Posted May 10, 2024 You may need a swimbait rod rated 1 to 4 oz approx like IROD IRG793SB. The technique described is good for slow sink glides/swimbaits. A slower motion jerk bait retrieve. The floater glides are more like a wake bait where a reel retrieve with flow rod sweep side to side and a few pauses tends to work good. All I can say is be patient and slow down you cadence to dance with the lure watching for followers. Tom 2 Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 One of my favorite baits to fish. Caught a lot of fish on them, big bass, pike and stripers. They catch fish! I fish the high end glides I just think they have a better action, and sink rates! I never liked the main brand glides until I bought my first high end glide. It was a DS customs. Fishing that glide it quickly became one of my favorite baits to fish. I had the best season I’ve ever had on that in my 30 years of fishing New England. In the first month of owning it, I caught an 8lbs 2 ounce, 7lbs 5 ounce 7lbs 1 ounce and many smaller fish on that bait! Plus with the high end baits, especially DS customs he can make any pattern you want! 1 Quote

The Bait Monkey got up early, read this post, drank three cups of coffee, and is currently making my life miserable. In order to calm the hyped up monkey, I Googled DS customs. As I anticipated, the website had many pictures of big fish caught on awesome looking lures, that I can't afford. The price tag did not discourage the Monkey and he is about to loose another epic battle with my wife. I would like to thank you for adding excitement to what would have been a boring Wednesday. 2 3 Quote
