So I'm in the market for a new tournament rig, I'm looking at a 2018 Triton 21 TRX, boat is super clean no damage fully tournament ready with 3 Solix 12, mega live, ultrex 112, power pole blades, priced at $50k

Seems like a decent price but looking for opinions, the gear alone is worth about $17k

Congratulations @Justin38 on your decision to upgrade to a tournament level rig. I’m just a little curious as to what you meant by $17k of gear (is it included tackle) and what is the make, HP rating, hours on the motor and is the trailer in good shape? I don’t want overload you with questions but those are a couple of mine based on your original post.

Trailer is good, mercury 250 pro xs

The gear I mean is the 3 Solix 12s

$3k each, the blades bout $2k each, and the ultrex bout $3,500 oh and mega live all come with the boat,

My current ride is a 1992 champion 192, that I have personally rigged for tourneys, with 4- garmin 93s and entry level power poles, been a good boat and still is just ready for a newer one to fish all over Texas

With way boat prices are now days, just trying to get an idea of that's a fair price

I can’t comment on whether that is a reasonable price for a boat like that, but if I was going to spend $50 grand I would personally buy something brand new. There are a lot of boats you could buy and rig with your own options for 50 thousand bucks.

Thanks for filling in some of the details @Justin38, still would like to know the hours though as it’s gonna be a 7 year old boat pretty soon. I also did the same type of calculations with my old boat vs new and went with a new boat.

Keep in mind, value the equipment at used prices, not retail. You will have no warranty them. You may be able to pay a fee to transfer any warranty the Triton has. I think it’s overpriced at $50K.

I doubt ill ever need a $50k boat but if i did i would buy a brand new one, right off the showroom floor.

You really just cant beat new, ive learned alot in life so far and one of the most important things ive learned is about buying used cars, dirt bikes, jetskis, etc.... No matter how great they seem, youll have no idea how they were taking care of, how they were worked on or taken apart/put back together.

Was good gas and quality oil used for the whole life of the engine? Or was it almost ran dry several times a year? You just dont know.

Thats alot of money, and will probably be something youll use for awhile, do yourself a favor in the long run and get something you will have 100% confidence in. If you can get a new one for similar price go for it. And if tournament fishing you definitely want something that you can depend on every fishing trip. Plus everything will be customized for you, not for the previous owner and their choices.

Only advice i can give for this.

I doubted I'd ever need a $300 combo but, after fishing with them, it sure beats a $30 Ugly Stick.

I agree with your post. Unless I am 100% sure of how something was taken care of, buying new is what I prefer as well.

As far as the OP, if everything is in good working order, the pricing appears pretty fair. The market is beginning to crash. If you can hold out, folks selling out of desperation and bank repo's are going to start popping up.

I am of the opposite camp.  No way in hell I would ever buy new.  I personally think that boat is too new most likely in the value chain.  Classically about the time a boat is 10 years old it is done depreciating.  I have a boat and haven't shopped lately but could see you saving another $10-15k if you step back a few years.

My friend was a tournament fisherman and he said any electronics over 3 years old lose their value such as if it was $3k new don't add that to the value because it isn't worth that anymore.

I think Solixs are starting Gen 5 or something like that soon.

It's a fair price. I'd have the motor checked to be sure. There's no way you will duplicate that boat for 50K.

True, you can buy a new boat for 50k but what ?A Ranger aluminum, or Vexus maybe a 18ft Nitro be fore you add electronics and an Ultrex.

I'd stick with the Champ before I'd do that.

Have you looked the boat up at JDPower formally NADA?  That will give an idea of its value.  Just remember that used electronics aren’t anywhere near their original value, probably 20-25% of original.

Dad always said, "when buying used, you are most likely buying someone else's headache."

There are pros and cons in the new vs. used arena...

Last four pickup's have been brand new. Went with used Lund...got lucky and found the exact boat I wanted, for the price I was willing to pay. And got to set up with brand new electronics and trolling motor, still within my overall budget.

Any boat, truck, or car is worth what someone is willing to pay. NADA / Blue Book value is just a starting point.

If you like the boat, have it checked out, and get a "test drive." Good luck!

My thoughts exactly, lot of people say buy a new one, thats where I looked first and there is absolutely no chance I'm ever gonna spend $80k-$100k for a boat, and your right $50k might get me a Z7 or Z8 or aluminum but like you said I would just stay in the champ before I did that, the whole point is to get in to a full size 21' tournament rig

Yeah I looked at a 2013 skeeter FX21 it was basic no power poles and only the basic little Lowrance in the dash and they have it at $40k, by the time I rig it I'll be into it another $15k so my thoughts are spend $50k and get one already rigged

Thought about that too, been waiting a couple years but they're still selling new ones for $100k, it's just like trucks and homes people are still paying these ridiculous prices so I don't think it's gonna change anytime soon,

Used boats are ridiculous price too but not quite as bad as new, about 8 years ago before everything went stupid a 6 year old fully rigged boat would've cost about $40k so in my mind they're only getting to me for $10k that's better than the price gouging on the new ones

Based on what I’m seeing on eBay.  I would value the Solix at around 2K each if they are Gen 2 or Gen 3.  Probably more like $1500 if they are Gen 1.

Buying new has its downsides also.  If you pay $50K for a new boat,  it’s a $40K boat when you launch it for the first time.

Yeah I get that what I'm meaning by $17k worth is if I bought a basic boat and had to rig it it would cost me about $17k, I'm thinking the electronics are newer, they're probably Gen 3 because it's got mega live

Yeah but I'm wanting a 21' glass boat, I fish tournaments all over Texas and we've got some pretty rough lakes here for example Rayburn in January in my 19' champion is pretty hairy

MEGA Live will work with any Solix.  If they were purchased when the boat was new they are Gen 1s.   I have two Gen 1s and a Gen 3.  Not a big difference in features.  The Gen 1s are very sensitive to voltage fluctuations.  That’s my only complaint with them.
