This thread has mid-January cabin fever written all over it.

Dislike: Drop shot

Can't stand: Ned rig

Doesn't work: Banjo minnow

Posted

Dislike:  Weightless worms, both Texas and Wacky rigged.  Cast.  Let it sink.  Pop it off bottom.  Reel in and cast again.  I used to enjoy the amount of fish I could catch using them, but that's before I gained faith in other things.

Can't Stand:  Ned rig.  I've relied on it to catch fish.  I just don't like fishing it.  It's small.  It doesn't cast well.  It takes forever to sink on a decent line size and every time I break this miserable technique out, the day was awful to begin with.

Doesn't Work:  A-Rigs.  Every instance of me threading a bunch of small swimbaits onto jigheads and installing them on a chandelier ends with that twenty dollar chandelier, five bucks worth of jigheads, and five bucks worth of swimbaits becoming zero fish and a thirty dollar hole in my wallet.

Dislike: Weightless. I’m a jig guy and too impatient for the bait to hit the bottom.

Can’t Stand: Spinnerbait. I always seem to get it hung up on something. A lot of better options to use.

Doesn’t Work: Ned Rig. It only catches rock.

Dislike: A-rig, feels like I am chucking the kitchen sink at them.

Can't Stand: Drop shot - 😴 - snooze fest.

Doesn't work: Jigs, Can't get a strike. I think our lakes have too much crap on the bottom and the jig hides in the crap. :dontknow:

Dislike: Senko. Sinks too slow and I don’t have the patience for it.
Can’t Stand: Drop shot. About as exciting as watching paint dry

Doesn’t work: Chatterbaits.

Surprised a tiny bit to see the dropshot in here so much.  But also I know what I'm throwing more this year. 🥷🏼

Hard for me because I'm willing to try new things readily just to feel a tug

dislike: ned rigs

does it work? yeah. is it fun? sometimes. Just pretty uninteresting. Rarely finds its way on my spinning rod unless they are that off.

can't stand: chatterbaits

despite the second largest bass I've ever caught coming from one, they don't stay on my rods long. Just feel there's so many better lures, also don't like them around grass where everyone uses them. seems to get gummed up way too easy. Hard to pick a can't stand as I do somewhat like a chatter at the end of the day, but it's more of a last resort. would rather a spinner or swim jig.

Doesn't work - Jerkbait. Worked one time, missed fish. Never again. Haven't thrown much though, because they seem to waste my time and I can catch more on something else.

Same.

I know they can be a bit slooow to fish in the traditional set up. But I also use Drop Swimming where you precisely keep the swim bait above the snotty vegetation we have here.

And in that case, it works very well indeed.

Let's blame @Deephaven as he's always tooting about how well frogs work on Tonka for him.

While I would prefer to fish a frog 100% of the time and always have one tied on even on Tonka, I've never said nor will I say they work well there.  Before post spawn and sometimes late fall sure, but otherwise I waste my time with them when I should be doing something else.

My take away from this thread is that the list of the most hated baits is pretty much the same as the list of the most loved baits.  My guess is it’s probably pretty close to the list of the most popular baits. 🤔

Drop shot seems to be the most common answer here.

As previously stated, if that's what I have to do to catch fish, I quit.  I'll just come back another time when the fish are willing to bite something else.

Dislike & Can’t stand:  ‘Dislike’ and ‘Can’t stand’ are basically the same categories for me. There are lots of baits I rarely, if ever, throw because of those two reasons. Senkos and Whopper Ploppers are at the top of this list. Maybe throw them in the ‘Dislike’ category since I pretty much won’t throw them at all, but I own a couple of each.

‘Can’t stand’, add the Texas rig, spinnerbaits, lipless vibrating baits and Carolina rigs to this list. They get tied on maybe once or twice a year, do catch a few bass on them, but they are all extremely situational for me.

The Bass just don't want it: Underspins - have owned them ever since they came out…what, some 30 years or so now, and never even got a bite on one, let alone caught a bass. I’d gladly throw them all the time if bass actually showed a modicum of interest in them - lol.

Dislike most Texas rigs.  I have a fortune in soft plastics and I cant catch crap on a Texas rig.

Cant stand a shakey head.  I have fished this some much over the last 3-4 years and have received 2 bites.

Doesnt work is an underspin.  I have had zero bites on these to date.

Dislike: Carolina rig and DS, I will use them if I have to.
Can’t stand using: Whopper Plopper
Can’t catch bass on: Whopper Plopper

Can't remember a lure the has unset me more than the Whopper Plopper. Half a blade of grass will stop the blade from spinning. Since people mow their grass everyday from April till October the grass is always floating down the Potomac. I can drag an 8' tree with a Tiny Torpedo and the blade still spins.

Dislike: Spinnerbaits.  Just never liked them much.  Always hated it when dad made me tie one on.

Can't stand: A-rig.  I just flat refuse to throw something that makes fishing that much work.  My brother says "You'll throw one when that's all they are biting."  My answer to that is, no, I'll just stay home or hit the river instead.

Can't catch: glide baits.  Thought they were going to be all the rage.  I've tried and never caught a fish on one.

Dislike finesse baits.  Midwest finesse, sliders etc

Can't stand treble hooks

Can't catch fish on plastic jerkbaits.  Probably user error

Dislike-crankbaits, yeah I catch fish on them, but I don't fishing them. There's a lot of fishing days that I don't have a cranking rod with me in the kayak.

Can't Stand-C-rig, I'd rather just go home than drag a ball and chain.

Can't catch fish with-Deep diving cranks, I think our fish are scared of deep water. I own a lot of crankbaits, I bet less than 15 of them dive pass 10'. I also own a deep cranking rod, but I'm not sure the last time I used it.

I love all the Ned rig hate. I think that's a big part of why I win so much money on them 😂

Dislike: crankbaits, which only catch weeds

Can't stand using: walking topwaters. The walking action hurts my wrist.

Can't catch bass: magnum sized worms... never even gotten a bite

DISLIKE: Jerkbaits only because 6 of 9 hooks are in the fish and all nine eventually get hung up in the net BUT they are very effective here.

CAN'T STAND: swim baits over 3" especially equipped with an under spin.

CAN'T CATCH BASS: lipless crankbait / rattle trap which also falls under the dislike and can't stand category 😁

Dislike: Treble hooks.  I fish with them, I catch with them, I am under no obligation to "like" them.

Can't Stand: Diving crankbaits.  No confidence in them at all.  I can never tell if they are running true or at the right depth and just when I feel like I'm getting the hang of it I snag bottom and lose the lure.  Plus treble hooks.

Can't catch "any fish at all": Lipless crankbait.  Unlike the diving crank I actually feel like I can work a lipless proficiently.   Depth, retrieval speed, bang'em off cover and rip'em through weeds and somehow have never lost one.  Also have never caught a single fish on one but I keep trying.  Also, treble hooks.
