BRAKE MECHANISMS FOR BAIT CASTERS

hey fellas being new to baitcasting the 2 reels I have have the newer combo of the centrafugal/magnetic brakes. I was curious what you prefer. I am happy with my reels but this is my only experience just wanted to see what you more experienced fellas like

i prefer centrifugal because it backs off as the spool slows.bass pro has a really nice system where a centrifugal plate comes out to a set of magnets.i have this on a rick clunn reel and it also works well.my preference would not stop me from buying a pflueger supreme with both kinds.i could see where it would be nice (on a windy day) to dial in some magnets.

Most of todays reels are so much better than what we had in the past that it almost doesn't matter at all.  I did vote centrifugal though, as I like the reels I own and have used with them better than mine with magnets.

Got reels with centrifugal, got reels with magnetic, both work fine, the art of not backlashing is in the final run on the thumb. Modern day baitcasters are authentic marvels of enegineering with very sophisticated systems designed to make the reel operate smoothly, efficiently and witha high degree of user friendliness, but they don 't perform miracles.

Some say that it 's a nuisance having to open the sideplate to set the brakes in a centrifugal reel, true to a ceratin point, others say that magnetics are better because you don 't have to open the sideplate, you can adjust from the outside with the dial, true to a certain point.

I 'm not going to say that I never backlash a reel, I do ocassionally specially if I do something stoopid, but after years of practice such ocassions are rare, but, I also, very seldomly set the brakes in different manner, my centrifugal reels are always set with 2 weights on, my magnetic reel are always dialed to 3, which is pretty much equivalent.

So really, once you 've learned to control the beast it doesn 't make much difference at all.

To be honest, i turn the magnets off, i turn all of the pins off, and i have the tension set as free as i can without the knob falling off.

I am just now switching to baitcasters so I love the magnetics!  I have mine turned up too much but that's just so I don't get disgusted with fishing out backlashes all day.  I can cast further with a closed face most of the time and more accurate.

I am switching to baitcasters and with practice (so I'm told), I will get better to where I can turn the magnetics down to around 3.  I usually start around 5 and work my way lower or higher as needed.

I went with magnetics but I'm not sure that I prefer one system over the other. There is no option for centrifugal w/o pins.....I do hate the d**n pins

I've got both but I've never really seen any distinct advantage of one over the other.  The mag's are easier to adjust.

The Quantum reels have an externally adjustable cast control that I believe is centrifugal. Also some or all of the Pflueger baitcasters have a centifugally applied magnetic actuated system. I don't have one yet but it is an interesting concept.

As said in the final analysis your thumb is the backlash control; the reel system just allows you to be a little sloppy and/or forgetful from time to time.

I release all the brakes and use the cast control (tension knob on the crank) to adjust for lure size. The old Bantam Mags were of course magnetic and the newer shimanos are centrifugal. I think the centrifugal is more reliable. I really like the DC (digital control) on the newer Shimanos, I actually adjust and use it. This is the future of cast control. I wish I could afford to replace all my reels with DCs. JMHO
