LeakyWaders Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 If I spool my baitcaster up with 20# braid (powerpro) and a flouro leader. Will that be okay if I were to throw treble hook baits (cranks, jerkbaits, etc.) Or is 20# braid too much for lures like that? Also, my casting rod says it’s rated for 6-15 # line. I know the general consensus is never go below 20# for a baitcaster. Why are there casting rods with a low line rating then? I’m afraid to throw 20# braid if my rods max line weight is 15#. its a 7ft medium regular action daiwa rod 1 Quote

Long as you got a leader to take the shock, it shouldn't be a problem...just don't 'swing for the fence' when setting the hook. 8 minutes ago, LeakyWaders said: Also, my casting rod says it’s rated for 6-15 # line. That's just the optimal line to use with the rod - also, ignore it for braid as it's based on line diameter, not pound test. My flipping stick is rated to 25# test - I got 50# braid on it...so don't worry it too much. 9 minutes ago, LeakyWaders said: its a 7ft medium regular action daiwa rod This will help with the hook-setting issue - a Regular by Daiwa is pretty much a M-MF by others...good treble hooked lure action. 3 Quote
Mbirdsley Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 probably be alright depending on what flouro and what rod. Some flouro can be springy. if using a Fast action rod you could buy some cheap mono like berkley xt. I like big game for main line but, for a leader i would use XT. Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted April 29, 2024 Super User Posted April 29, 2024 it depends on the rod. My 7' MH/MF is fairly soft. I spool with 30 lb 832 braid as my lipless rod and also throw crankbaits on that a bunch. If the rod has some give, then I wouldn't worry at all. A mono leader is helpful, but won't give you that much give. Quote
Alex from GA Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 Lighter braid tends to dig into itself on a baitcaster. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted April 29, 2024 Super User Posted April 29, 2024 The line weight rating on rods is fairly meaningless. For baitcasters I never go below 30# braid just because of how easily it can dig into itself and how terrible it is at shock resistance (birds nests with 20lb will send your lures into the next zip code). I prefer 40lb braid for most applications, 65 for frogging. Quote
ike8120 Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 U/L ususally 4-8#, General Fishing 10-20# braid. If I use FC leader, I usually go with the same #test or a little lighter. BFS I usually use lighter braid. Also check the reel manufactures recommendation. Quote
