I am trying to install a trolling motor on my first boat (1999 Sylvan ProSelect). First issue is that plug and receptacle are not compatible, so I assume that I change the receptacle? The other issue is that there is a switch that activates battery one or two for the TM. I have a 36v trolling motor, so I will need to wire to two batteries. Not sure if I need to disable the switch or can just run both batteries on battery one?? Appreciate any advice.

1: If you're running a 36v TM, you'll need 3x12v batteries. Just drop that switch and get one rated for the voltage/amperage. Might be able to just replace the one that's there. You'll also want cut-out switches that disconnects the batteries from each other.

2: I would definitely replace the receptacle..might be advantageous to replace both actually.

3: Get a good charger that can handle a 3-battery system - I'd recommend a NoCo Genius 5x3 (or 10x3 if you want faster charging). As you upgrade batteries to eventually Lithium (LiFePo4), the NoCo will still be capable.

what is the purpose of being able to disconnect batteries from each other?

sorry, I meant 24v...

Okay - then a Genius 5x2 or 10x2 for the charger (I have a 5x2 for my AGMs - 100ah for TM...12v Edge 45 - and 35ah for the 'house' battery...lights, pumps, etc)

If left connected when not used - they can affect each other and shorten the life.

Everything in the photos you posted concerns me.  You need to make sure that your new trolling motor does not pull more current than your wiring can handle.  The wires in the photos look small to me.  Doesn’t mean it won’t work but there’s a lot that can fail in those photos.   If it was me I would remove the plug and switch and wire the trolling motor straight to the battery.   Make sure you have a breaker at the battery.  Find out what gauge the existing wiring is and make sure it’s meets  the requirements for your new trolling motor.

I assume that I would need the 5x3 to charge two TM batteries and one house battery, no?
