What lead acid batteries seem to consistently best in terms of longevity….getting 3 solid and perhaps 4 years

Appreciate any feedback you your experiences

If you’re getting 3-4 years out of the ones you’ve been using, I see no reason to deviate. That’s good life span for lead acid batteries.

Thats about what I got when I used them too. I generally used the interstate brand.

My 12 year old AutoCraft just finally stopped taking a charge this year. Used as the primary 12V for 4 years, and as a back up for the last 8 or or so.

Ive gotten a dud Crown, and a dud Exide.

EverStart is currently my back up 12V, with another Crown that has served as primary 12V for the last 3 years or so.

3 years is now my max that I’ll have a battery serve as the primary. After 3 years it gets relegated to back up status. It will serve as a back up until it stops accepting a charge, then I recycle.

I just replaced my Interstate batteries (starting and deep cycle) after six years of use.  They were still performing well but I prefer to replace before failure.

^ Ya, I'd go with AGMs myself - actually I did when I built Bass Trek...didn't even think of Wet-Cell or Gels...went straight to AGM (couldn't afford Lithiums)

Another advantage to AGMs - other than upside-down, you can mount them in any orientation...can't do that with Wet-Cells.

I had good luck with Interstates, lasted 7 years and rarely needed water. Had Everstart too, lasted 4 years and always needed water.

Now a days I’d agree with the above and go AGM’s if lithiums are out of reach.

In the past, I have done well with Walley World batteries, current ones are from 2019, this is 2024.....do the math !!  When these go bad, I will switch to lifepo4 batteries for my trolling motor.

So Walmart trolling batteries? Really? Is there a house brand name? What should I be looking for?

7 years….amazing. Perhaps need to get some interstates!

Walmart lead-acid batteries were always one of the most popular go-to’s as the batteries were good quality, priced well, and there are Wally Worlds all over the country if you had a problem and needed a replacement.

I bought a set for my old Z20 about a year ago.

I think Walley uses the "Everstart" name but can't remember for sure.  Lots of Walleys around the country, returns are easy, can't beat the price!

Are there better batteries....yes of course there are, but you will also pay more !!   In my area the Interstate batteries are difficult to get a warranty claim on when you have an issue, thus they are not as popular and they can be pricey.  All depends on what you have good luck with....

As for lead acid batteries (which includes AGM), there are only a few manufacturers left out there.  So it's really common to find the same battery sold under dozens of different names.  And the technology is really old at this point, and there's nobody investing in improving this tech.  So it almost doesn't matter what brand you buy.  They're just about all the same.

What I would be focused on is buying from someone who sells a lot of deep cycle batteries.  Since most stores won't charge their unsold batteries, I prefer to buy from someone who sells enough batteries to ensure that you get a fairly new battery that hasn't sat on the shelf forever, self-discharged, and allowed the plates to sulfate.  Well, that, and price.  No use paying more for a sticker that no one can see.

What is better to drive a Minn Kota 55lb tiller trolling motor?

Walmart EverStart group 27 deep cycle website listed "Amp Hours at 1A = 109"

or

Sam's Club Duracell group 27 deep cycle website listed "20 amp hour rate: 80" and "minutes at 25amps: 175"

There are different ways of measuring battery capacity.  The specs they provide make it impossible to accurately compare the two.  Personally I would go with the Duracell because it’s made in the USA and the 20 amp hour rating is a better test of real world performance.  I would be comfortable buying either of them.

My vote is for the Duracell.

The EverStart battery is made by Excide.  The Duracell is made by East Penn.  You can tell by the shape of the box.

They don't say where the EverStart was made, but Excide has plants in India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and the UK.

East Penn makes batteries in Pennsylvania and Iowa.

So I'd go with the Duracell, especially since the prices are similar.

I use the Walley World  ( Everstart) group 31 and 29 in my boat.  Current ones are from 2019.  Previous set went over four years, can't beat the price.

They are all made at the same 2 places, the brands are just different stickers slapped on them

Wouldn’t consider a water filled marine battery today, go AGM zero maintenance with longer life.
