Well in was 1988 on Lochloosa lake. It was a 6’6” Lews rod, made in Korea. It was a heavy, stout action. Had a graphite fore grip and gold frame Fuji guides. Best rod I ever owned. Reel was a Quantum burgundy colored with a magnetic dial, graphite frame. That reel never gave a moments trouble. I took both items to Puerto Rico about a dozen times.. the fish broke me off on a topwater at daybreak I suspect but can’t be certain, but 10 minutes later she was mine. Same rod n reel but I tied on a worm hook and a Gilraker worm, black spinal core, 6 or 7” probably 1/2 ounce weight (lead) 16 pound Stren clear blue saltwater grade.. here’s the recovered lure, it popped up about 10 minutes later, I’ve never used it since! I pitched into a circle opening in the very thick hydrilla and BAM! Big fish big fish!!

11.2 weighed in by Wade Boggs father who ran the fish camp.. he had large tanks, long and fairly shallow and if you caught a big fish they would tag it and hold it while you kept fishing..( a lot of guide fishing with clients) I loved that place. Totally. Buddy Baker of NASCAR fame told me about the lake when he came by a friend of mines father in Georgetown, In. He had a 10 pound mount with a 10” blue Mann’s auger tail worm. I swore I would fish there and I was 15 at the time, and so I did….its the greatest fish story of my life and there are others.. but it’s my most fond. Again, here is the topwater bait pic, I believe it is a Poes cedar bait…

An older fiber blend G. Loomis CBR 783 paired with a Core 101 Mg spooled with that old wiry Sufix fluorocarbon, on a Rapala Scatter Rap Crank.

Here's that combo:

All I remember was it was in the late 80's on spinning tackle, 5" Culprit worm.

The reel was more than likely a Shimano.

In south Florida with all our heavy cover I am using a MH 7’ bait caster rod with 15 pound floro or a similar bait caster with 50 pound braid for heavy cover pitching, 90% of the time.

The day I caught my PB we struggled all morning to just catch a few small bass.  Around noon on a Cristal clear day, I decided to change tactics and go with my only spinning combo.  A 6’7 spinning Rod with a Shimano Sahara reel with 8 pound mono, and fish the outside weed edges.  I suddenly saw a commotion next to a steep bank  in two feet of water, and immediately threw my weightless zoom fluke into the swell.

The bite happened quick, and lucky for me the fish decided to run out into deep water instead of into the weed fields.  I got her to the side of the boat and was amazed at her mouth.  She was 27.5 inches long, and 11.5 pounds.  40 years of fishing all over south Florida, and to this day is my personal best, taken on a very difficult day of fishing, on my lightest rod and reel, using the lightest line I use.  How Sweet It Was!

My largemouth peanut butter is 9lbs and I caught it on a weightless purple worm using a light wire 3/0 offset worm hook tied to 8# mono spooled on a 55$ Lews ML combo I bought at WalMart.

Maybe it was 10# mono. Who cares.

You guys amaze me. I caught my PB about ten days ago and I don't know what rod and reel I used. It was a spinning reel with a MH rod. Probably 30 lb. braid.

My biggest largemouth was 10 pounds and 6 ounces, caught on a MHF Abu Garcia Promax combo with 12# Berkley Vanish with a Booyah Bankroll Jig in Money trailered with a YUM Craw Chunk 3.75 in Craw.  That was a private pond.

My biggest public water largemouth was nine and a half pounds, 25" long, and was caught on a Daiwa Tatula 100 snugged onto a Daiwa Tatula XT 7' MLR with 10# Yozuri Topknot Mainline Fluorocarbon tied to a Sexy Blueback Herring Strike King 3XD.

My personal best spotted bass, 19", didn't weigh, was caught on a Daiwa Tatula 100 on a 13 Fate Chrome 6'7" MF with 15# Berkley Big Game tied to a Berkley Drift Walker 110 in Ghost Shad.

I’m seeing a lot of trilene users on here, it’s a solid choice for sure I have spools and spools of it.

My Viper head jig is 7/16oz w/ Gamakatsu 5/0 hook tied w/bucktail, a real bass hair jig,  not crappie jig!
