Fishing the church graveyard pond this morning. Caught one on a black and blue senko. Was about to quit and cast near the drain where I had caught my biggest in there , and had lost a huge fish there last year. Threw over there, felt the tap, set the hook and … it broke on the set. 15 pound big game… I yelled NOOOO! 

Youve been there… It was her. What I call THE FISH of the pond.  Still upset after an hour . I checked everything before I went this morning, I think maybe the drag was a little too tight…😥

It's these ones that some how stick with us more than when we do land em.  Sorry Mike.  I've been there way way too many times.

I actually broke my line 3-4 times with fish in a drain on another pond. One day when the sun was overhead I walked by it and saw a concrete ledge sticking out . Was actually relieved and slightly disappointed at the same time !

I meant to mention that I worked nearly a year for that bite- I had the fish on for a good ride last year and it got off-to  no fault of my own. I think it may be the only real big fish in there.  A 13 was caught there 10 years ago on a shiner. So maybe it’s progeny?

Thats what I was thinking, I can’t hardly break that line without a knife . Bowfin ……. So we can sleep tonight

It’s one of those things where you just gotta pick up the pieces and start all over again, learning from any mistakes and making sure that those mistakes don’t happen again. Go over every detail in your mind and try to reason out exactly what happened and make adjustments accordingly. Sometimes this process can mean losing more big fish but eventually gets fewer and fewer. And once perfected, your confidence along with your gear should bring them in no matter what!

My Mom was just out fishing at Ol Muddy as well… she said she lost what she thinks was the pond record. Saw her jump and broke off at the hook. 
 

Okay y’all…. we’re okay…. I don’t think it’s going to happen to us too… right? Right?

The problem I have is that I have done this so long now  I think it just shouldnt happen . But it did.

Thanks for the try, but Ive never seen or caught one in there. Im thinking the knot slipped through the eyelet of the hook. That would get me “ off the hook” so to speak…

I would live in such a thread. I hook bass who seemingly have the parentage of a largie for a father and a locomotive for a mother. My reel's drag is the fat lady: She sings and it's over.

And you never forget certain fish you lost. I was fishing a tournament in Rodman in the 80s , and lost what was probably the biggest bass I ever hooked. She just turned , swam away, picking up speed, and the line broke like a pistol shot.  I would have won the tournament and caught a PB at the same time… 😕

My fishing partner lost his PB last week.

The water was gin clear and as I looked over the edge of the boat with net in hand  ,

The fish looked me in the eyes 👀 and gave it one more big dig and broke off.

He was throwing a deep diving crankbait on a 6'6 med light and wants to blame me for spooking the fish. 😂

Man, losing these PB fish must be a form of initiation. I've seen it happen and it's happen to myself and is indeed something that hangs around in memory for a very long, long time. Those "what if" moments that could've changed the outcome for a lot of people--gone in a flash. Sometimes I think big mama bass thrive off just that!

Those big bass come close enough to us to get a good look at our astonished faces. Then they have graphite replicas of our faces made.

I lost one last year at 4 am that was probably my second DD.  I feel like the really big ones often bite when we are spacing out and not doing much of anything with the bait.

 

It's really hard to watch your line in pitch Black though.  And I didn't feel her til she was 40 feet to the right of me.  That's just ONE that's gonna haunt me forever.

 

Nevermind the fish that broke me off when I backlashed a cast with my hybrid hunter and then proceeded to jump repeatedly trying to throw the bait.  That one was well over 2 ft long.  It felt like trying to reel in a sack full of concrete until it came to life and just snapped me off.  Probably a DD.

 

That's another fun one.

What's weird, Pat, is that a big bass might weigh 5% of our individual weights. And they don't have all our technology. And even then, they win.

At night is espeically diabolical. The bigguns hit so hard down my way that it practically swings my kayak completely around. The fight is pure hand to hand combat in the dark and these big bass are very good at it. They're sneaky. They hit when least expecting, almost as if they are following me. And when they come off for whatever reason, it's bye bye see ya later. They win, which is what they are designed to do. It's also how they get so big.
