The FG is the strongest, smallest, and best.  Its also trickier to tie and tie reliably/repeatably.  The alberto is about 85% as good and far easier to tie.  For me, if I'm tying at home to set up a rod then I'll go with the FG.  if I have to tie it on the water I'm tying an alberto.

I don't know what the "best" knot is, because when I learned the Alberto knot I stopped looking for a better one.

^ What others have said - FG when setting up pre-trip...Alberto on the water. Works fine with 8#-10# Sufix 832 to 6#-8# InvizX

I’m all FG down to 8lb braid to 6 and 8lb FC, then I switch to an Alberto. I find that when I am using such fine line I don’t need the thinness nor strength needed with bigger lines. An Alberto with 8lb PP is crazy thin. Sometimes the FG can be tricky with something ch thin line as 8lb braid.

Double uni works great for me

I always try to tie the FG knot no matter what line size. PR knot is the strongest knot. If I want a quick and easy knot the double uni.

I have used most knots and had break offs at the knot.  I carry spare spools for my braid to fluorocarbon setups, however, since going to the FG I have never had to use one.  I fish on Table Rock and there are lots of rocks, ledges, deadfalls, and brush piles.  Yesterday I had a 12’ 10# leader on my light Ned setup.  By the end of the trip I had a 4’ leader but no knot failure.

When a leader knot thread pops up there are always some members who tie the FG knot at home but tie a different knot on the water. I always wonder why you’d use a leader knot you can’t tie on the water?

My personal choice is the uni-to-uni. I use 10# braid and 8-12# fluoro. 3 wraps of the leader then adjust the number of wraps for the braid so both knots end up equal in size. I can tie on a new leader correctly while standing waist deep in the river in under 60 seconds.

I've only ever tied the Alberto knot so can't speak of the others.

I can tell you this,

Whenever I snag and have to break off, the leader is still there.

I like the Alberto. In a pinch, a triple surgeon's knot has worked well for me too.

I use a shin knot tying 10 lb braid to 6 lb flouro.  It’s the easiest knot I’ve found, holds well and makes a tiny knot. I’m FAR from a ‘knot guru’, and can’t even tie a good palomar knot!

Alberto is my choice most of the time.  I use FG for salt water applications, and Uni to Uni if the diameter of the braid is larger than the diameter of the leader material.  I used the Uni to Uni and Albright exclusively for many years, but stopped using the Albright, completely and only use the Uni to Uni occasionally, after tying my first Alberto.  Braid to Braid connection, I use the Uni to Uni, mono to mono, I use a surgeons, and braid with leader over 50 pounds I take the time to tie an FG.
