I bought a Cabelas brand spinning Reel awhile back only because i could get it for like 1/4 of the price. The deal is I bought the size 3500 reel. It is a little larger than the other sizes of spinning reels i usually fish with. It is 14.1 oz., Capacity: 210 yds of #12 line. It has just been setting on my shelf for almost a year now and i havent really found a use for it. Well while going through all my stuff for the winter i found this reel and have been trying to find a good use for it. Do any of you guys use this size of spinning reel for Bass? If so what rod, line, and techniques are you fishing it with? Thanks!  ;)

The only freshwater purpose I can think of is sturgen. It's way too big for anything I fish for.

Fish Chris would say that for swimbaiting, I concur, with that line capacity and size you can use rope as line and not suffer even a little bit.

I just this year dusted off an old Daiwa 3500 reel and started using it with 14# Fireline because I wanted better casting performance than I was getting from the 2500 size. As you probably know, all other things being equal, a bigger spool yields better line performance. I use this from shore a lot, so it gets used (with a 6'6" medium power rod) for a variety of applications. When I'm in a boat it's usually used for soft plastics.

But the bottom line is, as far as I'm concerned, is that if the reel's weight doesn't bother you, you can use this reel with 8-10-12# line for whatever uses you'd use that line for on a smaller reel.

Marty....I thought I was the only one that favors the larger reels.  I mostly use Sahara's and the great majority of them are 4000's.  One is set up for my wife to C-rig with on a GLoomis 7' heavy fast.  I agree that line behavior is better with the larger spool and that is the main reason I favor this size.  Perhaps this in part goes back to the old days when lines weren't nearly as good as today.  As you said, if the weight isn't a problem then other things shouldn't be either.

Papa Tom,

I use the larger reels as well, I have two Shimano's in the 4000 series. One is a Sahara and the other is a Symtre. I had a 2500 Sahara and did not like it, it seemed too small. I guess I am partial to the larger reels because most of my reels see double duty between Bass fishing and inshore saltwater, where line capacity is a must.
