throttleplate Posted April 16, 2024 Posted April 16, 2024 Went fishing on Saturday, walked through some woods to get to the river, arrived home at midnite took off clothes put into hamper showered went to bed. Sunday wife found tick on her neck when taking evening shower. Now on monday night went to bed, tuesday morning at 3:30 am i feel something on back of my thigh and brushed at it and felt something come off, got out of bed turned light on wife asks whats wrong and i find a tick crawling on bedsheet. Wife is freaked out and so am i as we tear down the bed and then back to sleep. In the morning we grab clothes out of hamper and wash when wife see"s another tick crawling on the wall by the hamper. From now on i will take off my fishing clothes in the washroom and keep them in there. With the unusual dry warm winter in the midwest i wonder if it increases the tick population? Ticks and me always meet up in the spring and i find them on me before i shower not 2 days later crawling on me while in bed. 2 Quote
Will Ketchum Posted April 16, 2024 Posted April 16, 2024 When walking through the woods I use a walking stick to beat the brush before I pass through to get any ticks off their game. Every few yards, I stop and check myself out and then continue on. Quote
Super User GaryH Posted April 16, 2024 Super User Posted April 16, 2024 Time for Permethrin. Spray my hunting clothes down every spring for turkey hunting and itās last for 6 weeks. No more ticks 3 Quote
Kev-mo Posted April 16, 2024 Posted April 16, 2024 I brought at least one home with me from camping last week because I found it on my foot the next morning. However it was dead. Either I have toxic blood or it was too weak to really latch on. There was a little mark so I'll be looking for the bullseye or other symptoms. I've rarely encountered them much in the past. Usually covered up in long pants/shirt in the summer when when wet wading. Also try not to do too much bushwhacking too much poison ivy/stinging nettles etc. Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted April 16, 2024 Super User Posted April 16, 2024 Nasty little effers. Iām a magnet for em. Iāve found 5 embedded in me in the last 2-3 years, including one right on the tip of the junk. That was no fun. Funny, but not fun.Ā Ā Iām no longer landscaping full time so hopefully I stop picking them up.Ā 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted April 16, 2024 Super User Posted April 16, 2024 This subject was just mentioned in another thread. As @GaryHĀ indicated, treating your clothes with permethrin is a good idea if you intend to walk through the woods or long grass again. They can cause lymes disease, which is no joke. Ā Warm than usual winter absolutely plays a role. Bitterly cold temps kill insects. If you get rain, that will create a new hatch of ticks, and other insects. 1 Quote

Super User FryDog62 Posted April 16, 2024 Super User Posted April 16, 2024 The first sign of ANY unusual symptoms, go to a Lyme-friendly doctor that will put you on a preventative dose of Doxycycline without testing. Ā The testing is antiquated CDC technology and only is accurate about 40-50% of the time. If you actually do have Lyme but test negative, and go more than 2-4 weeks without treatment with an antibiotic, Lyme goes systemic and for most people, never really goes away. Itās a horrible life/long affliction for manyā¦ Ā If your doc says you donāt need to be tested or treated, go find one that will.Ā 9 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted April 17, 2024 Super User Posted April 17, 2024 We live in tick central. Between my wife & I and then all the dogs, we've seen & pulled an ungodly number of these bugs off of us & them.Ā Some years are worse than others.Ā We spray the entire dog yard, kennel & property perimeter a couple of times a year. Really cuts down on the over all tick instances, but we still get a few. ALL our dogs are on tick flea & tick preventative meds all year long.Ā Not Free.Ā If & when the tick attaches to the dog, it just dies.Ā It's the ticks world, we just happen to be living & playing in it.Ā Not every tick carries Lyme disease.Ā Identify biters, getting them off right away and then monitoring the bite site is key.Ā Ā Learn the symptoms and know what to do in advance.Ā As mentioned, it can be serious so give it it's due. Ā Having ticks end up in ones bedding is either seriously bad luck or inexperience.Ā Placing any fabric suspected to have ticks, in the dryer on fry for 30 minutes. Is a good plan prior to washing.Ā Ā A-Jay 3 Quote

Super User Choporoz Posted April 17, 2024 Super User Posted April 17, 2024 Last year in North Central NC was bad.Ā This year is shaping up to be even worse.Ā Found more ticks on us and the dog by mid April than ever before. Ā This with minimal time in the woods or long grass thus far.Ā Mostly just lawn, garden, fishing, etc.Ā Ā Quote

Super User N Florida Mike Posted April 17, 2024 Super User Posted April 17, 2024 My daughter noticed one on my neck awhile back and got him out before he got in too deep. Super User Bankbeater Posted April 17, 2024 Super User Posted April 17, 2024 Last Saturday I was out in the yard, digging up a spot of ground, getting ready to plant grass seed.Ā I looked over and saw a tick on a blade of grass.Ā The grass is maybe 4" tall.Ā I checked myself real good when I came back in the house. My dog comes in the house regularly and I donāt want ticks crawling on her when she enters. My wife freaks out when she sees a tick. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted April 18, 2024 Super User Posted April 18, 2024 After my son had tested Negative for Lyme twice in one month, he got a haircut (very short, clippers in the back). It became very apparent - two large bullseyes at the base of his hairline. Went back to the doc and tested negative a 3rd time and they would not put him on Doxycycline.Ā Ā He didnāt get on Doxy until 3 months later (different doc) and it was far too late. Now 5 years later he not only has all the fatigue and joint soreness that he started with, but now chronic infections in his liver and prostate a couple times a year.Ā Ā Heās 27, miserable, unemployable and understandably quite depressed. Prime of his life.Ā Ā Bottom line, if you have symptoms and test negative and your physician will not treat - go to your state Lyme Foundation (many states now have this, including Minnesota) and have them get you in touch with a Lyme doctor that will treat you within the first 2-3 weeks the symptoms start.Ā 1 2 Quote
