Tackleholic Posted April 15, 2024 Posted April 15, 2024 I did not find an earlier topic on this. I use a landing net for both Bass and Brown Trout. Sometimes the fish will flop around in the net and damage themselves with 3 sets of trebles. When I finally get hooks out and release the fish I am still left with hooks entangled in the net; usually time consuming to get them out. Megabass 110's are the worst. I'm asking for recommendations on the type of net which could best alleviate these situations. Quote
papajoe222 Posted April 15, 2024 Posted April 15, 2024 I'll attempt to address both of your concerns. When netting a fish that is hooked with treble hooks, the best way I know of to keep the fish from impaling itself on the other hooks, is to keep tension on the line thereby keeping the fish's head pointing up. Don't lay the net down until you do so. You can then remove the fish from the net, provided the lure isn't caught in the net. A coated net will resist tangling with hooks and is the type I've been employing for years. The coating of the nylon prevents the hooks' barbs from catching the fibers or the hook point from easily penetrating the net. 1 Quote

I always keep tension on the line, and attempt to keep the fish's head as high in the net as possible, but entanglements still will happen. Can you give a recommendation for a good coated net? Quote

looking45 Posted April 15, 2024 Posted April 15, 2024 I replace the treble hooks on my lures with inline hooks. Replacing the treble hooks with inline hooks will help eliminate a lot of your problems. A single hook is also harder for a fish to throw than a treble. Handling the fish will be safer also. 2 Quote

No doubt that is a good idea. My handle of "Tackleholic" is not to be taken lightly. Owner could possibly add another production shift to produce the number of hooks I would require to do a changeover from trebles. Thanks for your suggestion. Quote
Super User Solution casts_by_fly Posted April 15, 2024 Super User Solution Posted April 15, 2024 A wide mesh rubber coated net solves nearly all of those problems. Multiple trebles will still hook up, but they are unhooked easily as they only wrap around a given mesh point, not bury into the material like a fine mesh net. Also, when you net the fish, if you can leave the whole net in the water the fish will chill out quickly most of the time and stop making more of a mess of the hooks. 4 Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted April 15, 2024 Super User Posted April 15, 2024 I use a Frabil conservation series net. Works fine for bass & brown trout with jerkbaits. Here's a little tip from me to you. When hooks go in the net, get over it. Take the few minutes it takes to get them out. It's part of fishing. 😎 A-Jay 2 Quote

I've never found any one net better than another with hooks. So I gave up and just bite the bullet. A-Jay Quote
Super User Scott F Posted April 16, 2024 Super User Posted April 16, 2024 Rubber nets are much easier to get fish and hooks out of. The trade off is rubber nets typically have smaller bags and are heavier. Hooks will still catch, but it’s seconds to remove the hook from a rubber net compared to minutes it took me to untangle the lure from the conservation series Frabil. 2 Quote
