Sinjin Kim Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 See what kind of advice you get from the Navy! Shimano fan and disses the Navy... we are not going to get along, lol... I am a BIG fan of Daiwa and an 8 year veteran of the U.S. Navy. To answer the poster's ?, I would suggest a TD Advantage HST. It runs for $130 and for the price, it is a solid reel. Once you get better with bait casting reels, then you can step it up to the TD Sol, Fuego, TD-X, Zillion and ultimately the STEEZ. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 24, 2006 Super User Posted December 24, 2006 Just playing, I would never diss the Navy or any other branch of the service for that matter. Regarding reels, there are a number of good reels at almost ever pricing point. We all have our favorites, so that's probably going to be the recommendation that we make. Quote

A lot of things said on message boards are taken out of its original context and for this reason, I tend to add a "lol" or "JK" after some of my comments just in case. haha. Well, it is time to go fishing. Hope you have a great Christmas Eve. Quote
Super User MickD Posted December 25, 2006 Super User Posted December 25, 2006 No one has mentioned my favorite reel under $200, the Shimano Calcutta. Only has 2 ball bearings (where do the other reels have their 10 ball bearings, anyway). Most important are two that mount the spool, a good drag which it has, a good backlash preventative system which it has, a good anti reverse which it has, well made in all other aspects, has lasted 15 years of pretty hard fishing and still casts like new. I have a few other reels with more bearings, but they don't cast as well. When I buy a new reel I may go Curado based on all the stuff I've read here, but if bucks are an issue, check out the Calcutta. More important than getting everyone's opinion of their favorite would be to find out where we can try out the various reels before we buy. How about some help on this issue, guys? (and gals, sorry) Quote
