Hulkster Posted June 24, 2024 Posted June 24, 2024 Quote Anywayssss, 10 years ago Quantum was regarded as being real high end equipment with every component costing at least twice as much as an equivalent component from pretty much most other top notch manufacturers I don't think they have ever been considered high end equipment. At least not compared to shimano or diawa reels or G. Loomis rods etc. Quote
BassCats Posted June 24, 2024 Posted June 24, 2024 I still like quantum reels. I enjoy my Accurist reels. Though they no longer have the facility in Oklahoma. Parts are much harder to get since Rather outdoors bought them. hopefully they stay around as I prefer the ACS cast control system. Time will tell. Glad to see A-Jay still taking care of those Exo's he bought from me many moons ago when I was going through some financial difficulties. 1 Quote

The Smoke S3's are not far below. I was just thinking about this thread yesterday.... if I was offered new 2018-ish Smoke 100's for my Zillions, I'd probably accept the offer. Quote
ABU is overpriced Posted June 24, 2024 Author Posted June 24, 2024 1 hour ago, 406-mm said: I’m a little late to this thread, but I still had to post cause I am shocked at the forum’s collective memory and/or at how many really young guys we must have here (like younger than me @ 34). I’ve been out of the game for about 7-10 years till April/May of this year when I dusted off my Shimano Crucial rod and Stradic reel I bought around 2013-14 and only used for 2 seasons. The setup is still like new. Anywayssss, 10 years ago Quantum was regarded as being real high end equipment with every component costing at least twice as much as an equivalent component from pretty much most other top notch manufacturers. It was literally like Cadillac vs Chevy at least as far as pricing went. You’d see someone with any type of full Quantum setup that wasn’t some entry level combo from Walmart and you’d automatically think “wow, they’re balling out over here.” Sad to find out that they barely even exist only 10 years later… I dunno, maybe in the US? But here in Canada, they were always a "side brand" you don't pay attention to unless you can't afford a daiwa/shimano. My very first baitcaster was a quantum accurist from 2003-2004, and even back then, i only got it over shimano and daiwa offerings is because they were less expensive. The difference is that Quantum was pretty big back then, lots of branding all over, and KVD certainly helped them stay in the spotlight. Now, i don't see them at all, its almost as bad as Plueger, a brand that made actual quality, expensive reels back in the early 2000's. Quote

Quantum and Zebco are recognized brands by the public at large for whom a $30 reel is sufficient. True. I used to hear the same thing about upper echelon bows from Mathews, Hoyt and Bowtech in the bowhunting world. When the average bowhunter was using an inexpensive PSE or Bear bow from a big box store. I bet 75% of anglers use combos that cost less than $100.00 for the rod, reel and line. I look at folks fishing when I can, and I do not see all the St. Croix, Dobyns, Loomis, et al rods that we all own and fish with. Quote

I'd say it's 95% around here. I see way more random, inexpensive, plastic reels from a clamshell on inexpensive rods in my travels than anything else, and I always glance at other people's gear when I pass by 'cause I'm a gear geek. Also, it's extremely rare that anyone comments on my more expensive combos, like almost never. 1 Quote
