BassSteve Posted April 8, 2024 Posted April 8, 2024 Hey, So I have had the scorpion bfs reel for a few years now, but I think it's time to get in the bfs world lol. I would probably use 6 pound line or 20 pound braid. Throw small crankbaits and finesse worms. Should I go medium light or light power? What are some good rod options to use with the scorpion bfs or bfs reels in general? What length would be good? Thanks Quote
torm Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 I use are daiwa blazon 64 bf which works quite well for ned rigs and worms. Not super expensive either. I have thrown smaller cranks and bigger cranks on it but its a bit stiff for the smaller ones but doable. Depending on how small of a crank you plan on using, the medium might be a bit overpowering especially with 20lb braid. Then again if you plan on more power finesse then the medium would be better. I fish mainly rivers though so I don't really need to hog them out of any cover. Be careful with the scorpion spool with braid. I've heard some people warped it in the past with braid because they treat it like a regular baitcaster. Quote
JN94 Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 20lb braid is too big for BFS imo. I'd try 10 or 8. 6lb fluoro works as well. For how I fish BFS, I like a rod rated 1/8-3/8. Should be able to cast the "heavier" end of the spectrum in most cases (5-7g) 1 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted April 9, 2024 Super User Posted April 9, 2024 That depends greatly on the line. Japan X-braid in PE#1 is the perfect diameter for most BFS applications. Most are 20- to 22-lb breaking strength. https://www.jpfishingtacklenews.com/japanese-line-size/ The rest of the world only talks in line diameters - pound-test doesn't even make sense in the US, where it's used exclusively. 3 Quote

This is where the comment "this is pretty strong for x pound line" comes from. Those arbitrary measurements used here let manufacturers get away with using larger diameter line and labeling it as something weaker. Berkley Big Game is a good example. Their 8lb is a diameter similar to competing 12lb lines. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted April 9, 2024 Super User Posted April 9, 2024 Here is what I would suggest Rod - Kistler Hunt BFS 6'8'' UL or Dobyns Sierra Ultra-Finesse 700C. The Kistler being my favorite Line - For braid, sinking YGK Ohdragon x4 #0.8 or #1.0 PE with a 10lb Fluorocarbon leader or for Fluorocarbon, 5lb Sunline Sniper. Lures - Megabass Griffon BFS or Shimano Baby Macbeth. There are tons of options here but these two are no brainers. Soft Plastic - Ned Rig Worms, anything from Great Lakes Finesse, and some sort of bug bait just for fun. 1 Quote
Robinhood21 Posted April 10, 2024 Posted April 10, 2024 Big fan of the Phenix Feather L & ML models. The L is probably my most used rod in my line up as it’s my ned rig rod. 1 Quote
