BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted April 7, 2024 BassResource.com Administrator Posted April 7, 2024 It's not as simple as it sounds... 3 Quote
volzfan59 Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 No matter the size, I always put tilt outboard's up on a transom saver. Saw a guy nail a speed bump with his skeg once, wasn't a pretty sight. True enough, it was in a shopping center and a fairly high speed bump but, it taught me a lesson! Quote

The hill I lived on as a kid had a couple cross streets so as you went up the hill you’d hit a level cross street and then go up again. Kinda like a bench. If you trimmed down a bigger motor you’d drag the skeg. As it was with the 150 on a motor toter you had to go slow. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted April 12, 2024 Global Moderator Posted April 12, 2024 I wedge lumber under mine instead of overpriced transom savers and turn the wheel all the way left 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted April 12, 2024 Super User Posted April 12, 2024 I use a My Wedge on mine. In the past with our family boats we've used both a small section of 2 x 4 with a smaller 25 hp outboard and the traditional metal rod to the trailer transom saver on a 75 hp yamaha outboard. The wedge can get pretty stiff in colder temps. Its more like a brick than a piece of hardened rubber. Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 With the old boat and the 20hp Mercury 2-stroke, left the motor down. No issues with clearance, and it seemed to stress the transom less. New boat came from dealer equipped with the wedge. I swapped it out for a Transom Saver. Quote
airshot Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 On my smaller motors I always made a wood wedge to hold the tilt and a bungee strap around the LU to keep it in position. Never an issue, but on my larger motors that have power trim and tilt, I just allow the hydraulics to hold the motor in position. Been a boater for over 60 years, never had an issue doing this... Some years back, I replaced the rollers on my trailer. Not thinking, the next launch, the 22' boat rolled off the trailer and down onto the out drive unit backing down the ramp...ouch...had to wing the boat back onto the trailer, but the out drive never moved out of position !! If your hydraulics are in good condition, they have no problem holding your motor into position. Quote
Super User tcbass Posted April 12, 2024 Super User Posted April 12, 2024 Just bought an Alumacraft Competitor 205 with a 250hp Suzuki. Emailed Suzuki on how to tow it. They responded with, "Use a My Wedge and then a ratchet strap to tighten the motor down just enough so it doesn't bounce up. Do not crank it down too tight." https://m-ywedge.com/ *** Note, I am not affiliated with My Wedge in anyway. lol 1 Quote

Who supplied the Wedge, the dealer or the Lund? Suzuki recommended the My Wedge to me for my Alumacraft. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted April 12, 2024 Super User Posted April 12, 2024 This has been good for 3 seasons now ~ My ProXS asked me for it by name. She's fairly demanding btw. A-Jay 1 Quote

Ranger recommended a wedge on my Merc when I bought my boat in 2016 too. I had never even hear of it until then. Always used a traditional transom saver connected to the trailer. Quote

Dealership supplied the wedge. To my knowledge, Lund & Mercury documentation do not specifically tell you one way or the other. I've always been a fan of the transom saver. It's easy on-and-off. My dealer said be careful with the Wedge...a few of their customers forgot it was installed...and cranked down on power trim, caused damage : ( Quote

Not a manufacturing problem. I actually had a Wedge one on of my last boats and never forgot to take it off, luckily. lol Quote
Super User J._Bricker Posted April 12, 2024 Super User Posted April 12, 2024 I appreciated @A-Jay’s recommendation and endorsement regarding the DD-26. It definitely tightens things up when trailering the boat and the fact I wasn’t a fan of dealing with 5 feet of transom saver. 1 Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted April 12, 2024 Author BassResource.com Administrator Posted April 12, 2024 Well, since the topic has shifted away from the original video's content (it was about which motors should be left down or tilted up for towing), this one seems more relevant now.... Ya, I know. I have a video for everything bass fishing. I may have a problem. Quote

Fixed that for you, Glenn With Bass Trek's 25hp tiller, I use the transom saver...but it's not braced to the rear roller, I mounted a brace on the trailer that the end of the saver gets pinned to...yes my trailer is steel. BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted April 13, 2024 Author BassResource.com Administrator Posted April 13, 2024 It's not a product review of every type and brand out there. Instead, there are essentially two TYPES of motor supports, and that's what it discusses. 1 Quote
