Lucky Craft Man Posted December 18, 2006 Posted December 18, 2006 I know it has been a question that has been asked 100 times on here about what line do you use for plastic worms. My question is a little more specific. My set-up for Senkos and other type worms is a G Loomis IMX with a Daiwa Viento reel. I have always used braid for worm fishing, but have been thinking about adding a flouro leader to the braid (so the leader can sink with the worm instead of offering resistance that comes with the floating braid being tied directly to the worm). I just worry about the knot at the connection point of the braid and the leader decreasing my casting distance and accuracy as well as doing any damage the guides on my rod. Does anyone have any experience using a leader with worms and if so, would you mind offering me some advice on the matter? I am also thinking about just switching to flouro or mono line altogether, but I do like the sensitivity and abrasion resistance of the braid. PS Sorry for the boring post, but this is a question that I need some experienced opinions on. Quote

Guest avid Posted December 18, 2006 Posted December 18, 2006 I use braid for worms. Your concern is a minute technicality that in practical terms has absolutely zero impact on anything. There are times when I will tie a mono leader to braided line. Worm and jig fishing is not one of them, but for surface baits, especially walkers, and also flukes, I like that little bit of stretch. I think it adds a little action to the lure. I also find that the lower visibility can be a confidence factor. I tie all my mono leaders to braid using a uni to uni knot. I double the braid before tying the knot. this leaves three tag ends instead of two, but I have never had it slip. Not once. It does however put a bulge in the line that can be heard going through the guides. i don't find that it affects distance or accuracy to any meaninful degree, but it is there. Quote

mike bat Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 i saw a show with the greg hackney .... he says to use a 20lb flour and a heavy wire hook .... this will let the worm look more natty on the fall .... i think ill try this system ,,, makes cents to me .... but that being said i have used p-line cxx 15-18lb and caught fish ..... i just wonder if a little switch up would improve my catch ( get me more bites ) ...... :-/ Quote
JT Bagwell Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 I use 40 - 50 lb test PowerPro for all of my soft plastics (and jigs). They only time I ever deviate from this is if I am fishing in clear water. Then I will use either Cajun Red line or Shakespeare Supreme as my main line or as a leader. It really depends on what is around me in the water. JT Bagwell Quote
CyBasser Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 Hi there, I use powerpro braid for all my soft plastics fishing. Until recently, I was tying the hook directly to the braid and have had no problems with it. Having though faced some clear water situations lately, I did try to use mono and fluoro leaders. As I fish from the shore, often at long range, I was afraid that there would be a loss in sensitivity, but this was not true. I guess one foot of mono does not affect sensitivity in any extend. On the other hand, I did experience an increased number of missed strikes, but with only a few attempts I am not sure if this was due to the leader or due to finicky bites. The length of leader I use is only 30-40cm (12-16"), so it is not a problem to cast with all the leader and 3-5" of braid hanging from the tip of the rod - hence no damage. I will experiment a bit more in this respect, but, especially if you face clear water conditions and high fishing pressure situations, I would suggest giving the leader a try. On the other hand, I recently fished after a long time with mono line throughout. Well, there is a marked decrease in sensitivity, not only for bites, but also feeling the subtle details of the bottom - it was as if starting fishing with soft plastics all over again. I guess it's a-getting-used-to-it thing (I know many of our friends here use mono for soft plastics) but I reverted back to braid as my main line immediately. Quote

Z71 Posted December 23, 2006 Posted December 23, 2006 I'll normally use 12 or 15 lb. Big Game, green, or 15# P line flourocarbon , depending on the depth and clarity of the water I'm fishing. Quote
gatrboy53 Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 to each his own. when worm fishing i want something thats going to get the worm to the bottom as natural as possible.i want something that is super sensitive,w/ very little stretch so i can get a good hookset. i want it to be abrasive resistant so i can go in the thick stuff. i dont want it to be in anyway a hinderance to a bass eating my worm,so i want it to be invisible. mono fits the bill on a few of those points,so does braid, but flouro or even co-polymer has all those characteristics..... chs773 Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 i always use either power pro braid or suffix seige i like them both. Quote
