TheWitness33 Posted March 29, 2024 Posted March 29, 2024 Hey guys, i'm thinking a setup like this would be really gun with Rapala jerk baits, senko (maybe?), inline spinners, crappie jigs and small crank baits. I'm unsure of rod power/action. Would a light/fast be OK for these applications? 8lb braid? I'm looking on tackletour unless you know of another retailer that will have what i'd want/what is recommended in one place? I'm trying to keep the purchase of line, rod and reel under $550. Thanks! Dobyns Sierra Ultra Finesse and Majorcraft Benkei light casting rods I have literally checked out all of those. Wondering if a shorter length isn’t better for BFS? I normally fish with a 6’6” medium or medium heavy fast action casting rod so light gear or ultra light or even medium light is all new to me in casting. I’ve owned those in spinning. It seems 6’5” and up is what’s offered in light, ultra light and medium light. Quote
Bass Rutten Posted March 29, 2024 Posted March 29, 2024 Budget needed to make reccos, how much of your $550 budget did you use on the reel? Quote

TheWitness33 Posted March 29, 2024 Author Posted March 29, 2024 Leaves about 180-190 for a rod. But I’d like to keep it as low as possible lol. The line will be suffix 832 in either 8, 10 or 15lb depending on what’s recommended. The reel takes “6lb @ 50 yards Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 30, 2024 Super User Posted March 30, 2024 6# mono? About .009D. Your choice of Rapala Jerk baits requires a shorter rod stronger tip to move it the lure. Yo-Zuri Pims minnow would be a better choice imo. My suggestion for what it’s worth is Dobyns Ultra Finnese with Maxima 5# /.008D Ultra Green copoly line. If you choose braid consider Fins 10# / .004D, Tom 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 30, 2024 Posted March 30, 2024 You want a long rod 7’> to aid casting and landing fish. 1 Quote
waymont Posted March 30, 2024 Posted March 30, 2024 I’d check out the Phenix Feather light power rod. Good for neds, top water, small cranks, jerkbaits, and I have fun w 4” wacky stick baits too. 1 Quote
msgf91 Posted April 2, 2024 Posted April 2, 2024 Could check out old 18. They have a UL and L in different price categories. They also have slower actions. I have a small batch Authentic UUL and plan to get more Quote
Motoboss Posted April 2, 2024 Posted April 2, 2024 The Phenix Feather C71L is what I recently bought to pair with my Shimano SLX for a BFS set up. The Feather throws small poppers, pond magic spinnerbaits, and 1/4 oz chatter baits and crank baits with ease along with 1/8oz blade bait with trailers on 10# Power Pro braid. Extremely pleased with this setup . 1 Quote
TheWitness33 Posted April 10, 2024 Author Posted April 10, 2024 Caught 5 fish on the new finesse setup with an inline spinner only. Very fun! Great rod and the reel casts lures I’d cast on spinning gear effortlessly. Probably my new favorite setup. 3 Quote

Bigbox99 Posted April 11, 2024 Posted April 11, 2024 I'd get a L or ML Majorcraft BFS rod and run 8 to 10 pound sniper for line. The Shimano BFS versions of their Zodias and up lines are great too. You really need to figure out what your main baits you want to throw are going to be. A crappie jig and even a 4" senko are pretty far apart. A rod that will do one of those well will not do the other well. I use an UL with solid tip for panfish jigs (1/32 head and 1 inch plastics) and ML for weightless 4 to 5 inch senkos, lightly weighted finesse worms and smaller 3/16 to 1/4 oz hard baits. 1 Quote

I bought that rod in the spinning model for a travel rod to handle lighter lures. BG 1500 and Fins Windtamer 5# (if I remember correctly). Line is too thin for me. Abrasion resistance on small limbs is non-existent. Quote
