jdw174 Posted December 18, 2006 Posted December 18, 2006 started with an older Quantum "Iron" IR4. No problems. Used Ronsonol on the bearings and used Simple Green to degrease and clean the other filthy parts : Keep in mind, this reel was 39.99 when purchased. The next one was a Browning Midas 6. When I started on it, something looked awfully familiar. It looked an awful lot like the Quantum I just finished. Opened it up and guess what??? They are the exact same reel! Only difference was a small bearing added to support the spool. Cost of this reel at retail was 89.95. I'd bet the farm that all the other parts are interchangeable. According to the booklet, Browning Fishing was HQ'd in Tulsa, OK........just like Quantum. How about that, sports fans? Quote
volpster31 Posted December 18, 2006 Posted December 18, 2006 hmmm.....very interesting..i would think that quantum reels would cost more than browning though. ive never looked into browning reels & i wonder if their still made Quote
CSB Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 Sounds like Quantum pulled a fast one on consumers after they acquired Browning! 8-) Quote
jdw174 Posted December 19, 2006 Author Posted December 19, 2006 hmmm.....very interesting..i would think that quantum reels would cost more than browning though.ive never looked into browning reels & i wonder if their still made Browning still makes reels, but trying to find any info about them on the Browning website is pretty sketchy. Clicking on Browning Fishing takes you to the Bass Pro Shop website. The "Iron" was a simple, low-end round reel. Mine has worked now for almost 11 years with no trouble. Quote
eulerentinc Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 Thats crazy!! You never know what youre gonna find out in the fishing world!! Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 Happy Holidays! A little history. CSB, Sounds like Quantum pulled a fast one on consumers after they acquired Browning!First off Quantum® did not acquire Browning®. Quantum® became a Browning® licensee to build reels for the company, but no longer do that....jdw174, Browning still makes reels, but trying to find any info about them on the Browning website is pretty sketchy. Clicking on Browning Fishing takes you to the Bass Pro Shop website. That is because BPS is now a licensee to sell reels for Browning® (no other company can). No one knows for sure who is building reels for Browning now...Tight Lines!!! Quote
Super User RoLo Posted December 19, 2006 Super User Posted December 19, 2006 Oddly enough, the only reel that ever truly let me down was a Quantum (unprovoked gear failure while still new). The only rod that ever truly let me down was a Browning (blank failure on a 3lb flounder). Since they both left a bad taste in my mouth, I'm not surprised that they were kissing cousins ;D Roger Quote
Papa_Tom Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 Yes, Brownings are still being produced. Altho based on my experiences with the only one I've ever used (or will), I can't see why. Have an Aggressor b/c that is so well made that 12 lb line routinely will get behind the spool. Been using and taking apart baitcasters for > 40 years, poorest made reel I've used. I'm thinking this was a $75-90 reel. Burn me once, shame on you...burn me twice, shame on me. My .02 Quote
jdw174 Posted December 19, 2006 Author Posted December 19, 2006 My only saving grace in owning two of those Brownings is that they were purchased from Dick's during a closeout sale while I was a manager there. Between the closeout price and my discount I got both of them dirt cheap . I think next year I'm going to replace both of them with a couple of Abu C4 4600's. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 The same thing happened to me when I was trying to take apart an older BPS Johnny Morris Reel. I couldn't figure out how to take off the handle since I didn't have the schematic. Then I noticed it looked a lot like my Pflueger President baitcaster's handle. I got the schematic for my Pflueger President and lo and behold, they turned out to be very close to the same reel. Now I use my Pflueger President schematic for both reels. Quote

Valascus Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 I just avoid the whole licensing issues and who constructs what reels and so on and so forth by fishing with nothing but Shimano reels. Good, high quality, affordable, reels. Quote
