Cutting point hooks

Hey guys, this is never really been on my radar but I was reading about how good they are. Have you some in the past but never thought about it. I got a couple questions for you.

 

Are all owner hooks cutting points or just specific ones?

 

Do I remember correctly that VMCs are cutting points? Are they all?

 

What other brands do cutting points?

Trokar, I believe it the "other" cutting point. I'm not a fan of the cutting hook points. I think they can make the hole bigger and still fall out as easily. I prefer the sharp point and lighter gauge coated hooks. Gamakatsu Hybrid, Mike McClennan hook and I want to try out the new Gammy Nano Alpha hooks too. I don't do a lot of flipping/punching into heavy cover with heavy braid and triple X strong hooks. That might be a instance where the cutting point would be helpful.

The only Owner hook I use is the Jungle flipping hook and it has the needle style point. I can’t see a scenario where you’d need anything outside a basic needle point. It’s the best at penetrating…

I've thrown the Trokar TK130 flipping hook quite a bit, but I've retired them. As others said, they seem to leave a much larger hole/wound in the fish and I never really saw a marked increase in hook/land ratio. YMMV.

My favorite hook is an Owner Cutting Point.   I use them on a lot of my jigs.  They also have worm hooks and stuff with a cutting point.  Like said above not all of their hooks are cutting point.  There was also another company called X Point but I dont know if they are still around or go by a different name now.  That was a few moons ago when I used them.😁

I avoided Owner cutting point hooks when they 1st came out thinking they would tear out. Gamakatsu were needle points and worked good.

Don’t recall when I started using Owner cutting point hooks but my fears were unfounded, good hooks that actuallly have a needle point that transition to a knife edge. Owner also offers needle point hooks.

Tokar are a true knife edge cutting point hook, haven’t used it so no experience.

I use the owner SSW cutting point hooks for sharks/rays in the bay and they seem to work fine. Didn't pick them for any reason beyond availability.

I’ve used Trokar hooks exclusively except for 1 presentation for years and have no reason to change. 

I haven’t experienced an inordinate amount of larger than normal mouth wounds compared to other style hooks that some see.

I can't completely discount reports of tearing, but in at least 20 years of using Owner cutting point hooks, I really haven't seen a problem or trend that would make me change what I use.

My current favorite hooks are Owners with a "super needle point".

 

Wonder what makes it "super" over traditional needle hooks? LOL 😆

I personally hate them.  I know it's anecdotal but wacky rigging is my bread and butter and I rarely lose fish when I'm doing it.  I tried a Trokar (I think) for several weeks in the summer and I lost more fish than I care to recall, and the ones I did catch the hook always fell right out as soon as I lipped it or got it in the boat.  Went back to the Gamakatsu's and all was well.

The owner offset wide gap hook with the cutting point is a excellent hook. The Trokar hook is good for people who need help with their hookset power because it is very sharp and easy to penetrate. The owner hook does a super job of penetration also but it doesn't seem to tear up plastics as fast. I have a pack of the new gammy hooks with the nano and I think they do just about as good as the owner hooks. Mind you I only have had that one pack. I'm still sold on owner so far.
