So a little while back I picked up a (6'8 st croix mojo medium extra fast rod) when the older generation went on sale. It says it's a "topwater" rod.

What kind of topwater lures would I want to throw with it? I read recently that the extra fast action is good for single hooks not treble.  I was considering throwing spooks and poppers and now im thinking that's probably not a good idea because of the treble hooks.

Then I was thinking maybe a zoom horny toad with a 4/0 hook might work but then I'm not sure if a medium is strong enough for that application so I'm just curious what most people would use a medium extra fast for?

For the moment I paired it with a slx dc 151xg 8.2

It would be good for jerkbaits, smaller walking baits (under a ounce), poppers. Weightless flukes & swimbaits comes to mind. I suspect it could very well be a good bottom contact "finesse type" rod too. Smaller T-rigged worms 1/8th to maybe 3/16th oz, finesse jigs too.

That's the part I'm confused about. I also read that they would be good for jerkbaits but with jerkbaits having treble hooks it confused me. I do have a dedicated jerkbait rod already but good to know.

That's great if it works well for smaller walking baits like smaller spooks and poppers because that's what I got it for.  Thank you fishingmickey!

It will be good for walking baits like a spook, spook jr. Sammy ect. Poppers, pencil baits and so on.

I'm sure would be a good jerkbait rod also.

I have two 6'10" medium/extra-fast casting rods in my lineup. They are excellent jerkbait and weightless senko rods, I also throw 1/2 oz poppers and walking baits on them. I have 12lb mono on one and 30lb braid to 12lb mono leader on the other. Don't let the extra-fast action fool you into thinking it won't work with trebles, the medium power has a lot of bend to it and will load pretty deep. Especially with St Croix, who are known to be a bit softer in action than some other companies.

I have the legend extreme 68Mxf, it's an amazing rod for jerkbaits.

Poppers, 1/2ish oz spooks, Square bills and small cranks work good too.   I've used 1/4oz keitech footballs with it too and those worked because of the scrawny hook.
