Tom Rust Posted March 25, 2024 Posted March 25, 2024 Asking my fellow brothers and sisters to get me off the fence and into the checkout lane at BassPro before their Spring sale ends. I have the $150 rod, but need the reel. I know it will be a 2500/3000 size, but the choices and sale prices are as follows: A. Shimano Nasci for $99 minus the $20 trade-in Rebate. B. Johnny Morris signature $99 on sale for $89 minus the rebate. Nets out at $69. Or C. The higher end J Morris signature reel (shiny red snd silver) usually $129 on sale for $99 less rebate nets at $79 so the Nasci is $20 off, the regular JM IS $30 off, and the f”fancier” JM IS $50 off. What’s your pick and why?? I’m heading em there Tuesday around dinner time while my wife is out with girlfriends (. Just a coincidence I’m going then 😉😳😳😳lol) 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted March 25, 2024 Super User Posted March 25, 2024 Since I am a Shimano guy that would be my pick. I recently bought a Shimano 2500 and a 3000. The 3000 holds way more line than I would ever need. 1 Quote
Tom Rust Posted March 25, 2024 Author Posted March 25, 2024 So stated another way, do you think the shimano at everyday price (before the rebate) is as good a reel as either JM REELS at $10 or $30 off sale price (plus the rebate) 1 Quote
Tom Rust Posted March 25, 2024 Author Posted March 25, 2024 {for redundancy sake, can be restated” Do you believe a $99 Nasci is as good and durable as the JM’s at $99/$129????}. I’m probably overthinking but would guess BP sellS way more JM’s so have lower production costs per reel than the Nasci, so price point of $129 MAYBE represents more features or quality than the shimano, or do you think BASSPro just slapped a higher retail Pice on a comparable to Nasci product than Shimano did with the Nasci?????? FrnkNsteen Posted March 25, 2024 Posted March 25, 2024 I have no experience with those particular BPS spinning reels to offer a opinion on those specfically. However,... I have been burned so many times by Bass Pro branded reels that I will no longer buy from them. Mine were with Pro Qualifier and Carbonlight casting reels and not spinning reels, but as a rule, I still won't take a chance on them again. Used to love the older Pro Qualifier reels. Then when they changed to the Pro Qualifier 2 reels, quality seemed to start dropping and I ended up returning the majority of the ones I got until I gave up all together. Now I stick to Shiman, Daiwa, or other namebrand reels rather than ANY Johnny Morris products. 3 Quote
Super User webertime Posted March 25, 2024 Super User Posted March 25, 2024 The red and silver JM is a Daiwa Procyon. Do it. 4 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted March 25, 2024 Super User Posted March 25, 2024 I quit buying Bass Pro branded reels a long time ago because there was no continuity quality or any idea of who actually made them. Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted March 25, 2024 Posted March 25, 2024 I think the JM reels are Daiwa AL framed LTs with mismatched Lego parts to keep cost down. I'm sure they're nice, but they're noticably heavier than their LT counterpart. If I were you I would just get an Exceler 3000 from TW for 80$. It's the same reel, without the AL frame, which you don't need for a small. The composite framed reels are nearly 2oz lighter, huge difference. NASCI is no slouch either. Quote
Reel Posted March 25, 2024 Posted March 25, 2024 If something happens, you can have the Nasci repaired, the other one, I don't know ? Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted March 25, 2024 Super User Posted March 25, 2024 As another angler that has used BPS reels in the past, I would buy the Shimano. Quote
KP Duty Posted March 25, 2024 Posted March 25, 2024 The JM has over-the -counter trade if it fails in any way. Pretty good selling point. 2 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 25, 2024 Super User Posted March 25, 2024 I have no experience with any of the reels you specify; however, I have a majority of Shimano spinning reels, the best being Stradics. That said, the pricing scheme has changed a bit, naming, too, and I haven't bought anything new in years. All that being what it is, I am also a fan of Daiwa and would have no problem picking one up. The JM, as stated above are probably fine, tho maybe not fully equivalent to current Daiwa models. Though I have no proof of that. I would be fine trying a JM out. The warranty seems pretty good. Held them this past weekend at the local BPS, they were very smooth and the bail felt great. Quote

They used to be really good about it, but in my experience, the last time I had issues with one of their reels, they started getting a little more resistent and they started requiring the receipt. Fortunately I still had mine so hang on to it if you get one. Don't know how long they will accept them back anymore though. My last one has been a few years so I haven't exchanged one lately. The sad thing with my last return was I noticed them putting it in the "Back to stock" basket. I stopped them and said it was defective. They looked at me and said " Well I didn't feel anything wrong with it" I said, why do think I exchanged it? They shrugged and moved it to the defective basket. Be careful if you get an open box reel there!! Quote
Super User MickD Posted March 26, 2024 Super User Posted March 26, 2024 If an anti-reverse switch is something you value, check the reels to be sure they have them. Many nowadays do not. Some professional reel servicers will not service off brands, so that might be of some importance. Quote
Super User Solution bulldog1935 Posted March 26, 2024 Super User Solution Posted March 26, 2024 The no brainer is $146 for a JDM Shimano Stradic. If you ever choose to fish braid, this reel will keep its line management accurate over longer, harder use. And boy, do I love my worm-drive Shimanos. But since you're not in that market, you'll find a low-end Daiwa built to fish harder and last longer than a low-end Shimano. At this price end, Shimano can sell smooth, but also at this price end, Daiwa builds tough. 2 Quote
Hulkster Posted March 26, 2024 Posted March 26, 2024 the current model nasci is very good. it has the screw in handle feature that has trickled down from higher end models. I would get the 3000 size and never look back. I have the 1000 size and its awesome. great caster too Quote
KP Duty Posted March 26, 2024 Posted March 26, 2024 14 hours ago, Tom Rust said: Not sure what you mean. I can go back with a complaint about the JM and they will swap out?????? Bass Pro will allow you to return or trade any of their store brand merchandise if anything happens with it. Doesn't matter if you've been using it for a season or 2. I think it just needs to be a current model 2 Quote
Bigassbass Posted March 29, 2024 Posted March 29, 2024 For 150 bucks you can buy a Shimano Stradic and that is a fantastic reel, better than any JM reel and a big step up from the Naci . I have both reels, I always fish the Stradic. There is no comparing Shimano to JM. Look on Digitaka and order one up! 1 Quote
