FrnkNsteen Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 I have kind of developed a liking for the various old Team Daiwa reels over the last year or so.. Started with the left hand TDZ and TDX 103HL versions with the clutch up on top, and then expanded to TDZ 103H, 100ML and 103ML, TD Fuego and noticed I liked the looks of the TD Sol but hadn't seen a lefty Sol for the right price.... Until last weekend that is when I saw one for a reasonable price on the big auction site. Got it in the mail this morning and it was in better shape than expected. Felt a little tight so I tore it down, flushed all the bearings and cleaned things up. Didn't know what I wanted to do with it and happened to look at the rod rack and saw the Kistler Jerkbait rod. Kind of looks like they were made for each other!!.... and throws a casting plug around the yard great. Can't wait to get it out and try it!! 9 Quote
Jmilburn76 Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 I just picked up three Shimano Curado CU-200b to try out. I couldn’t have afforded them back in the 90s but these were cheap enough so see what I missed out on. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 23, 2024 Super User Posted March 23, 2024 Nice looking combo. One I'm sure you will enjoy using. The Sol was the first reel I tried casting a true .25 oz. weight with. Forget the rod it was on. Had trouble with overruns until I go upset enough to put some oomph behind the cast. Did fine after that. When the TDZ and TDX were being produced was a period where I had quit fishing. When I got back into fishing, I wanted to try a baitcast reel. Purchased a TD Fuego on closeout. As the saying goes, "The rest is history." 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted March 24, 2024 Posted March 24, 2024 Although my love affair with Daiwa low profile baitcasters began before the TD line was offered, I enjoy them to the point that Sols, Fuegos and Alphas make up the majority of my reel inventory. Other Daiwa models make up the rest. Sweet combo. 1 Quote
Bigbox99 Posted March 24, 2024 Posted March 24, 2024 That's an orange Alphas. Common upgrades are to switch to a curved 90 mm handle, SV spool and butter smooth 7:1 gears from the Alphas SV105. Quote

Are the spools and gears from the SV105 still available anywhere? Quote

Alphas non TW spools. Parts are hard to come by new in the states. Tackle Trap has parts sometimes. https://tackletrap.com/collections/gear-sets/products/daiwa-sv-105hsl-7-2-1-gearset-lh Color parts like these Ize spools are expensive but there is a good chance you can get a used black SV105 spool from someone who upgraded to a BFS spool in their Alphas SV105. You can also go the BFS route pretty cheaply too. https://www.ebay.com/itm/364783398148?chn=ps&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1LywJPdS2R1OPriOtlIr8Pw52&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=364783398148&targetid=1585159291131&device=m&mktype=pla&googleloc=9024539&poi=&campaignid=20385105599&mkgroupid=150744488839&rlsatarget=aud-1412318123216:pla-1585159291131&abcId=9316499&merchantid=101650672&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwnv-vBhBdEiwABCYQA9Jx_8toCk8XzRx47CEysPF_b-w0CbC1x6oaTRZ2N9wbbKli_dFxgxoCGZAQAvD_BwE 1 1 Quote

I couldn't help but think one of those orange SV spools would be a nice addition to the Sol, so I went ahead and ordered one. 😜😜 And I'm not saying the gear set from Tackle Trap isn't tempting either!! Resisting the temptation on that though for now. 2 Quote

The reel comes up a lot in enthusiast circles often due to its unique color in a sea of black/grey reels. 1 Quote

Assuming it may fit the other 34mm spooled reels I have, but it is too big to fit in the Sol. I have other old Daiwas that I will try it in to see if it fits. I would think it may fit the older SV 105, TDZ 103, or TDX 105 that I have. Edit: Just tried it and it appears to be a 34mm SV spool as it fits perfectly in my TDZ 103H and TDZ 103HL. No worries on the mixup as it might be a nice fit in one of my setups. Edited March 27, 2024 by FrnkNsteen Added information Quote
DaveT63 Posted March 28, 2024 Posted March 28, 2024 The original Alphas variants, including the Sol, as well as the original Alphas SV, use 33MM spools. 1 Quote

Anyone opening this thread will be because they are interested in the Sol. You will get more answers in a thread about the specific reel you are asking about. Personally I've never hard of the 2050.
