Aside from the cosmetics, anything that could happen to the rod instead of being on the coat is going to be in the graphite material itself. So for example, a scratch instead of scratching the coat is going to scratch the material creating a weak spot and compromising the structural integrity of the blank depending on how deep the scratch is.

Word of advice:

if you call and they tell you they cant do anything about it (unlikely):

Still send the rod into shamano, and they will replace it. I called in and they told me a rod was out of warranty. I sent it in anyway and got a free one in the mail.

I've got a couple Shimano Convergence rods and they came with a lifetime warranty. I can't believe the Crucials don't.
