I have been trying to find any information or pictures of a certain Bass Pro reel. I believe it was the 1st model Extreme baitcasting reel that they made. It could also have been their first high end XPS reel. I remember it coming out in the late 90s or early 00s. I think it was close to 200 bucks and was green with a a lot of gold on it. I think the ends of the knobs on the handle had gold plastic ends. The front of the reel opened like a Corvette hood. I think they only made it for a year and then introduced a much cheaper extreme reel. For years after their round rod rack in the catalog had a rod with one on it. Does anyone else remember this reel? It was really cool looking but I think being a store brand and carrying that price tag at the time led to it not hanging around very long.

Search EBay for "Bass Pro Shops Extreme baitcast reel" and you may find it. No need to enter a year in your search.

@CaughtMeABiggun I wish I could help a little more and I may have a couple catalogs older than this one (2006) but I can’t get to them currently but I hope this helps a little.IMG_0298.jpeg.ffe7e0f644b2feeeffc68d1615e82ac3.jpegIMG_0299.jpeg.af97b45700fcdf4bd60b66f1f7afbcb9.jpeg

Thanks Eric, I believe that was one of the later Extreme reels after this reel came out. This is such an odd ball reel. Never found one on eBay. I doubt there aren’t any left around.

Daiwa Procasters from that era had a flip top hood. That might help you get closer since back then BPS  reels invariably rebranded reels from established makers.

Interesting, that sounds like a Daiwa T3 frame. I've seen a bps reel with a Pixy frame, so maybe they also had one with T3 frame?

That's a good reel.  That Doyo platform was well liked and many are still in service today.  The one OP is thinking of was this reel that I think is a silstar styled to look like a USDM TD-X but with a Shimano like VBS brake and brake access cover.  Back when Korean reel were still in copycat mode.

Flioger made a few reels based off that platform as well.

It's been years but my old fishing buddy use to buy five new ones every year.  He was retired and fished all the time, all year, and everywhere. These reels would be shot after a year's use. Some were held together with glue and duct tape and missing paint. He might have one that would be almost new. He would trade them in at the spring sale. BPS would take all of them no matter the condition. He would save up $500 for it and that would be his fishing budget for the year. I can't say if they were good, bad or just fair but they were not made for the abuse my buddy put them through.

That one doesn't have the corvette hood opening he described. The one I found has it, and I remember a few others that did too. I had a silver one that opened like that in the mid 90's. It was a total POS! LOL

I used those green extremes from back in early 90's.  I went through 3 of them, each one went back to the store because of problems.  One of the reasons I'm leery of house brands today.

None of the reels pictured so far is this particular reel. It could have been around 1997 or 1998. I just can’t remember. I just remember it being really flashy. Green with chrome gold plates that completely covered the end of the handle knobs.  I remember it being really high

priced for a BPS reel. If I’m not mistaken it would have been the highest price BPS reel in the catalog that year.

@CaughtMeABiggun I know it’s been awhile but I finally dug out my old Bass Pro Shops catalogs and the oldest I have is from 2001…but I think I found the reel in question. Let me know if this is it😉IMG_2935.jpeg.0b71d7c43561328ff1f5bb8dbce82e7b.jpegIMG_2936.jpeg.a3bb38c48d3dd33bd893b6f1c23a8d8c.jpegIMG_2938.jpeg.5871b58bf867a3aeb871c6575b270cc2.jpeg

My dad bought me 2 of these with the XPS IM8 rods as combos when I was 14. I was elated as all I had was a hand me down wel worn Shimano 10sg from about 1984 and a pistol grip lightning rod from the same time frame. Our line of choice was Trilene xl or BPS excel.

I saved up and bought a Curado, amassing several over a year or two, all of which I still have. The extremes were great to learn on and start out with and I got about 5 years out of them. The design was very close to the Pfluger trion. I also had some BPS Rick Clunn rods and reels from that time frame and found them to be a nice upgrade.

I appreciate all of the feedback, but none of the suggested reels are the one I am referring to. I think they made this particular reel before all of these. It may have been the very first XPS reel that they sold. Its been over 25 years. I do remember that for years after they quit selling this reel their picture of the round rod rack that they sold had one of these reels on it. The gold on the ends of the knobs covered the whole end of the knob. It was like a cap on the end of each knob. The reel was really exotic looking for its time. I believe the reel was around 180-200 bucks. I'm almost positive it was the first XPS reel and first Extreme reel.

I know what reel you are talking about.  It was when they were still using Silstar for an OEM before switching to Doyo.  I've only seen pictures of a Bionic reel but I'm sure they had Pro Qualifiers and Extremes too.  This is this the only pic I can find of one now.  The flip up hood was a somewhat common feature on earlier low profile reels to allow better access for threading line or picking out backlashes.

If its not the reel above then its unknow to me but from that era of these long low profile reels with flip up hoods.  Daiwa, Abu and house brands had them (note the bass master reel).  Last pic here is of an old low pro megacast BPS reel.  It looks to be from that era with flip up hoods.  Maybe your reel was the Extreme of that platform?

I'm pretty sure this was the first reel that BPS went upscale with. It's such an odd reel because the price was really high. It was 50 bucks more than a Curado at the time. It was available for such a short time before the extreme reel was slotted below the pro qualifier. Maybe one day I'll buy some old BPS catalogs from that time to pinpoint the exact year it was offered. Based off my memory and process of elimination the reel would have been manufactured between 1996 and 1998.

Here's a possibility. This model (EX1000XPHS) only appeared in 1999 ads I found, and while not in color, you can tell it has the metallic handle caps you mentioned, looks very similar to a hooded Curado in design, and carried a combo price tag that matched their Curado combos of the day ($200).

Yes! That is the reel. I remembered it being expensive for the time. Such a rare reel. I have never actually seen one in person.
