I am looking towards a Shimano Scorpion MG1000, or a Shimano scorpion Metanium XT reel. I gather the scorpion is like a Chronarch MG50 and the Metanium is like a Chronarch Super free, but I am lost other than that. Which one would you chose and why ? In advance thank you for the responses. :D Ivan

May I suggest trying the Shimano web site for a comparison of the items?

I don't beleive there are many people on this site who use either of the two products.

You would do better giving thought to how you will use either; their weight; features; etc. and make up your own mind.

As you know, you can't go wrong with a Shimano product.

Merry Christmas!

Your question got my interest so I looked at my 2006 Shimano catalog and also the 2007 on-line catalog and I can't find those reels.

The Shimano reels starting with a "C" are baitcasters while reels beginning with the letter "S" are spinning reels, so it looks to me that either there are new reels out that have not made the 2007 on-line catalog or you are using incorrect names.

Please check your information and let us know.

Here is the 2007 on-line catalog web site:

Please let us know.

Thanks.

Sam, the Scorpion is a japan model. that is why you don't see them in the catalog. they are comparable to the chronarch

Sam, I am sorry I should have mentioned that they were Japanese versions. What I am looking for is the HEG design , supposedly, the Japanese models were designed that way before the American models were, but I am only going by what I am told.I am looking for a new reel for jig fishing, I want to replace my old Daiwa TD1 reels with. I was told the HEG system is what I should look for, but they didn't tell me which reels have them ? Thank you Ivan

Well, that explains that! Thanks for the input.

I was going crazy wondering why I could not find them.

I am sorry, but I have no knowledge of these Japanese reels.

So give one a try and let us know how it works, etc.

Differences are:

Metanium XT vs Chronarch 100 B

1.- Metanium has stock 84 mm handle while Chronarch 100 B has 80 mm stock handle

2.- Metanium has lighter alloy gears making the reel lighter by about half and ounce

3.- metanim has clicking tension knob cap, Chronarch 100 B does not; if you like precision adjustments in that part of the reel it comes handy.

4.- You can find Metanium for around $195 while Chronarch 100 B is going to cost you $270 retail, and even if you find it in e-bay real cheap I don 't think you can get it for less than 230.

5.- Metanium only comes in 1 version ( 6.2:1 ) while Chronarch can be found in 3 versions ( 6.2:1, 5:1 and saltwater version )

Scorpion Mg vs Chronarch 50 Mg

1.- Scorpion Mg comes with 70 mm stock handle while Chronarch Mg comes witn 80 mm stock handle.

2.- Scorpion Mg has 4x4 SVS external adjustment braking not found in the Chronarch Mg

3.- Scorpion Mg is HEAVIER than Chronarch Mg by 0.3 oz

4.- Scorpion Mg has a lighter drag than Chronarch Mg

5.- Scorpion Mg can be found for around $180 while Chronarch costs $250 retail.

In performance both Japanese reels and domestic counterparts are exactly the same.
