justfishin Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 6'4" MH Team All Star rod. #14-#17 test---most of the time #15 Big Game. Abu Garcia C3 5501 This is a winning combo for spinnerbaits. The Abu Garcia and this TAS rod certainly shines for spinnerbait throwing. This is my setup for largemouth in Lakes. I use a slightly different setup for smallies in the rivers. River Smallmouth--- 6' MH Team All Star Rod fast action. #12 test---Excel Shimano Curado The reason I chose Excel line for my river fishing is that I am throwing pretty short most of the time on the Susquehanna in PA and Upper Potomac in MD. The #12 provides a little less resistance against the strong currents. Excel line is a little stretchy and it lends me that xtra shock strength on the hookup and for hard charging big smallies. A #5 and up smallie in warm water can be like hooking on to a Volkswagon going down the road sometimes, LOL. This has worked for me for a lot of years. Quote

Siebert Outdoors Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 I use my MBR843 glx for 3/8-1/2 and step up to a 844 for heavier ones. Line ranges from 12-20lb usually Reel chronarch sf or standard chronarch Main reason I use these rods, I dont throw alot of s/b. Out of what I own these work the best. Quote
TournyFish001 Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 I use a 6'6" medium action bionic blade with an older style chronarh spooled with 10-12lb mono- caught a lot of fish with it- I don't think you need a very sensitive "high end rod" for a spinnerbait- Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted December 12, 2006 Super User Posted December 12, 2006 Rod- 7' M BPS Bionic Blade Reel-Daiwa Procaster 100HL Line- 10lb Spiderwire stealth I use this combo for both Spinner baits and buzz baits, so far I have no complaints, I fish clearish water and usually toss 3/16, 1/4, and 3/8 size baits and this set up works great for that, the rod has enough back bone, and just the right ammount of "flex" in the tip. The reel has 6.3:1 (28" pick up) ratio and excells in tossing those smaller baits, which is surprising for a $70 reel. I used mono on this set up for a while, but the switch to 10lb braid (2lb mono diameter) allows me to fling 3/16 oz baits a mile, and really lets the baits run unhinderd by the line. I will take that over mono any day. If I am using any baits bigger than 3/8 oz. (rare) I usually use a 7'MH rod for that. Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Happy Holidays! bitman, Whats your favorite spinner bait set up???Im talking rod, reel and line? WHat do you use to throw the bladed fish catching machines??? For me it's the SC36'6" medium heavy fast action, custom spiral wrapped, split grip rod. Reel 1999 Accurist 501CX, spooled with 12# Sensation mono. Fishing a homemade 3/8oz tandem colorado, chartreuse/white spinnerbait (no trailer hook). Tight Lines!! Quote

The_Natural Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 I throw a lot of spinnerbaits, and I've got two identical setups that I run. I have mbr843 glx's paired with Daiwa Alphas. I owned two Loomis SBR's (spinner bait rods), but I found the mbr843 to excel due to the tip. I did have IMX 843's before the GlX's, but for the purpose of throwing spinnerbaits, I can tell no difference. The mbr843 seems to have just the perfect speed and power for throwing spinnerbaits. For line, I always use 15lb clear Pline CXX reglardless of water conditions. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted December 13, 2006 Super User Posted December 13, 2006 Reel: Abu Garcia 5600C4 Rod : 5-1/2 foot BPS pistol grip casting rod Line: 15 pound Yo-zuri Hybrid I can slow roll with this rig and run them fast just below the surface. In clear, shallow water the shorter rod lets me cast the spinner bait out from the boat and hit what I'm throwing at. Quote

Bream Master Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Not to get off topic, but from the posts, you guys use fairly large lines for spinnerbaits. I've been using 6-8 lb. Is there a reason for the large lines? Quote
Fatman1267MM Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 I have been using an Abu "Super 7" 7' composite rod with a daiwa procaster and Suffix Siege 12# I am changing my rod to All Star Classic 6' medium fast. I think this will help me with my accuracy and the weight difference will help decrease the wear and tear on my arm. Quote

RandySBreth Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Most folks think that spinnerbaits are "reaction baits" and fish don't really shy away from the heavy line. I'm not 100% on that, but in the places I like to use them, I risk losing fish in trees if I don't use pretty stout line. So.. 7' BPS MH "cranking stik" BPS extreme (wide spool) and 40 lb. Stren superbraid. Fish in my avatar was caught on that setup. For river smallies, 6'6" M "cranking stik" Diawa procaster and either the same line as above, sometimes 12 lb. flourocarbon. Quote
