JayMac89 Posted March 11, 2024 Posted March 11, 2024 You all are going to laugh, because iv only been doing this a tiny fraction of the time that you guys have. But last night i realized i have a issue. I have a metric ton of baits at home. I currently have a monster bass subscription. Pretty cool. Get some good stuff. Some not so good stuff. But it leads me to try things i wouldn't normally try, so i keep it. Anyway, i have 2 plano that go on the yak with me. One for hard baits, one for terminal tackle, then a bag for soft plastics. All the rest get left in old monster bass boxes at home. Organized and labeled. Well I'm at the point now where my system isn't working because i have to many, which means I'm breaking them down very specifically. It used to be a box labeled jigs. Now it's multiple boxes of jigs seperated by jig type and color. Same thing with crankbaits. And every other bait. Just bought a stockpile of baits last night off tackle warehouse for the upcoming season. Went through all my boxes to get a count of where I'm light. But i need a better system. So you know, i throw a lipless into a tree, can go home, and grab one from the stockpile to put back on the yak. Plano boxes in a bigger rubbermaid style tote was my first thought. But then your still digging through boxes to get to the bottom of need be? Got to be a better way. What kind of system and storage are you guys using off the water? Did a Google search and can not find anything. I have a few ideas but figured I'd ask the more experienced. Quote
Super User gim Posted March 11, 2024 Super User Posted March 11, 2024 Don't stock pile so much lures or tackle. There's no way a guy can use all of it anyways. I came to the realization that I've already got enough. Why buy more if I can't even use what I have? #lightentheload 8 Quote
Super User Bird Posted March 12, 2024 Super User Posted March 12, 2024 I could fish a lifetime on just what's on the boat, hooks, weights, hard plastics and soft baits. That much more is stored in the lower part of a gun cabinet. I have no explanation but will give it away when I get to old to fish, if possible. 3 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted March 12, 2024 Super User Posted March 12, 2024 It's a common thing for bass guys to amass way to much tackle. It looks like the bait monkey has entered your life. And, bass guys love tackle. I had the same thing going on a few years ago. I donated to the local Scout troop, and have given away a bunch to my grandson and a couple of his friends he fishes with. I carry far less now than I ever have, and, am still catching as many fish as I always have. 3 Quote
JayMac89 Posted March 12, 2024 Author Posted March 12, 2024 If I'm being honest, i don't really have all that much. I was being a bit dramatic. Alot of what i have came from the monster bass subscription, and i don't use alot of it. I think i may cancel it. You do get somthing cool or find a new technique every so often so it does have some benefit. It's cheap enough. But baits just keep coming. As far as the things i throw regularly, it's really not much. Color wise i go green pumpkin or black and blue. I throw chatterbaits, arkie style jigs, swim jigs and lipless mostly. Jerkbaits and square bills get thrown in the mix. Then the soft plastic finesse stuff. Not alot. But i do like to stock up. Not huge numbers but i like having extras at home. The strike king red eye shad in sexy shad is a favorite of mine. Just ordered 5. Number 1 confidence lure. Can't always find it locally. Sucks to lose a few on a Saturday, then have none on Sunday. And it's happened a few times too me. I like the outkast juice jig or the bitsy bug. Can't get them locally alot of the time and need to order online. When things aren't organized is easy to deplete what you got without ordering more. I got no problem throwing the "probably won't throw it" type stuff in a random box. Or giving them away. But a set up that can hold my favorite types of lures in an organized manner would be great. Not alot of real estate on a kayak. I dont carry alot. So you got to have some back ups at home. Don't think it's that crazy of a thought. I'll probably go to harbor freight and find some type of cheap storage system and make it work. My work truck is very organized and so is my shop at home. I'll figure it out. Just find it hard to belive there isn't anybody making a storage system larger than your standard tackle box/bag. Quote
papajoe222 Posted March 12, 2024 Posted March 12, 2024 I use a combination of storage systems. One is a pegboard for baits and tackle still in their original packaging. This is where I keep multiple bags of soft plastics and a few hard baits that the monkey talked me into buying. The other is a rack (actually two) that will hold multiple 3700 boxes. I mark the boxes with the contents and will replenish from them when necessary. I fish for other species, so some of those are taken when needed. BTW, the racks I have can either be utilized free standing, or mounted to a wall/pegboard. 1 Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted March 12, 2024 Super User Posted March 12, 2024 The hard baits stay in 3700 boxes in a couple of cabinets. The soft plastics stay in their original packaging, and I keep them in old tackle boxes that I don't use any longer. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted March 12, 2024 Super User Posted March 12, 2024 Ziplock freezer bags for soft baits. Hard baits in packages go in plastic shoe boxes. All else get 3700 boxes. Quote

Don't know why that took so long to think of. 1 Quote
Super User Munkin Posted March 13, 2024 Super User Posted March 13, 2024 Imagine Extreme Hoarders Bass Lures addiction show and I would be their pilot episode. Things I use day to day are organized but everything else is chaos in general. Allen 1 1 Quote
WaskaCrank12 Posted March 13, 2024 Posted March 13, 2024 I have 6 - 3700 size boxes and 8 - 3600 size boxes --- for hard baits and 8 - 8inch by 12inch bins for plastics ---- those serve as my limiters -- won't buy more baits unless there is space in a box/bin. Same with rods/reels --- I have a rack that holds 8 rods/reels --- and that serves as my limiter --- if I want to purchase another rod/reel then I have to sell/donate to make room for it. (I just gave my nephews two rods/reels because this winter I purchased 2 new rods/reels) Self-imposed limiters. Because --- if I didn't do that --- I just might be on my way towards having to build a small warehouse or a mega-sized one like @NorthernBasser has (I believe he is working on an Amazon sized addition ) 1 Quote

Pat Brown Posted March 13, 2024 Posted March 13, 2024 I'm legitimately looking into getting those perforated boards that you can affix to the wall and store products similar to the ones you see at fishing retail establishments. It's getting bad. 😂😂😂 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted March 13, 2024 Super User Posted March 13, 2024 I have pegboard wall with plastics. I have plastic storage bins and drawer/cabinets. I have a boat full, an SUV with boxes and 3700s, two closets full, a dining table I haven't been able to see for abouta year, a few boxes on a kitchen table, a dock box with a bunch of stuff, and a couple rod storage racks in the basement. Super User Bankc Posted March 13, 2024 Super User Posted March 13, 2024 I would advise you keep them in Tupperware containers in their original packaging. That will, at the very least, allow you to resale them later at a higher value when you do eventually come to the realization that you're never going to fish this or that. Plus they tend to stack better and are less likely to get tangled. Then keep the ones that you actually use often through in a separate Tupperware container, so you don't waste too much time hunting. Don't get too hung up on organization at home. Keep that for the baits you actually take with you in your tackle box. The problem with organizing random amounts of things is the parameters for organization are always changing. So it's really easy to have a ton of space being taken up by all of your dividers. In this case, you could wind up with 40, mostly empty, Tupperware containers. It's better to just fill a few up with a loose organization system, like jigs in one and crankbaits in another. It's not like when you're on the water and you need to save time. Besides, it invites the possibility of stumbling across something you forgot about and may want to try. Quote

fin Posted March 14, 2024 Posted March 14, 2024 Seriously though, if you build a rack to hold 100 lures, you will end up with 200 lures. And if you then build a rack to hold 200, you will end up with 400. At least that's my experience, and apparently it's not uncommon. So whatever you build, make it expandable, or go ahead and plan on making more in the future. Or if you're buying storage containers, buy way more than you need, because you will eventually need them, they'll cost more in the future, and you might not be able to find the same ones then. Quote
Fishlegs Posted March 14, 2024 Posted March 14, 2024 We understand because we have the same problem. The solution is to stockpile places to store stockpiled lures so that when your lure stockpile is overstocked you'll be able to continue stockpiling. Any questions? 🤣 1 Quote

rboat Posted March 14, 2024 Posted March 14, 2024 More lures than I could fish in three lifetimes. I still buy more. I call it a collection and it makes me feel better. I store all hard lures in 3700 boxes and soft plastics in their original packages in large plano type boxes that have no dividers. It is truly a sickness. I am waiting for a shrink to come up with a cool scientific name for it. That way I can tell my wife I have a real medical condition.😂 Quote
Bazoo Posted March 14, 2024 Posted March 14, 2024 I lose them about as quick as I can buy them. At least the ones I use regularly. I do like trying new things though so I occasionally buy a new variety. Quote
