Hey

I recently upgraded a couple of my reels with larger handles, I think it is more comfortable and in my opinion it makes the reels look nice. I installed a larger handle on my Shimano scorpion bfs reel and curado 70 reel. Could there possibly be any adverse effects to the reels by doing this? Can it cause some kind of strain on the reel?  Do they purposely not give certain reels larger handles to save money, or because a larger handle is simply not needed? Just curious about this

100% preference. Use the handle that feels good to you.

So a larger handle on a smaller baitcasting reel won't put a strain on it by doing that?

It will make it easier for YOU to put a strain on it against a snag or too big of a fish because you will have more leverage. The strain being if you catch a 50# fish (or a snag, etc...) on a reel that doesn't have the components to handle it, it will suffer damage (gears, bearings) no matter the size of the handle.

With a longer (larger) handle, heavier lures with high resistance will feel easier to reel in (I may have that backwards, it may be harder), so you may like that. But your hand will travel in a larger circle.

The only "adverse effect" is not to your reels but to your wallet, since after you've done one reel, you want to do the same to the rest. Some handles, like the Livre ones and KTF ones from Japan, are not cheap. As for why not all stock handles are like that, it's because some prefer shorter handles, which sacrifice winding power for winding speed.

Here you can buy your Shimano handles.

I just cant stand the tiny JDM knobs. I buy parts here and replace them on all my reels. I even put Shimano handles on my Daiwas..

Lol yes I have done 3 already 😆, the handles are not cheap that's for sure but still worth the upgrade
