I'm looking to build a new spinnerbait rod and I'm having trouble settling on a blank.  Usually, I have a good idea of what I want, but for some reason I'm really not sure about this one, because I don't fish spinnerbaits a huge amount because I feel my MH/F Daiwa Aird-x is a bit too soft in the tip, and my other MH is an XF worm rod.

I'm looking at MHX blanks mainly as I have really liked the ones I have built so far.  I want to throw spinnerbaits 3/8-1/2 oz. I'm torn between the MB873 and the MB874.  I'm leaning towards the MB874 because a 3/8 spinnerbait is more like 1/2 oz with the wire & blades, then add a trailer that can run from 1/4 to 1/2 oz and you end up knocking on the 1oz door.

I'd appreciate feedback on my thinking of an H rather than an MH.  I'm stuck in analysis paralysis.

I think the 874 would be too much rod for standard 3/8 and 1/2oz spinnerbaits.

I prefer shorter spinnerbait rods, so in MHX's lineup my pick would be the MB843, but the 873 would be good if you want that length.

My favorite spinnerbait blank is the Point Blank 691MHXF for what it's worth.

Edit to add:  I have built both the 843 and the 873 and would fish a spinnerbait on either.  Picking between the two would be mostly just preference on length....Though the 873 does feel a little more powerful, probably due to the extra length.

I like the 73 better as well.  When I built my spinner bait rod I felt my 844 was too much and the 43 not enough.  Built a St Croix LE instead as it was in between powers.  Kicked it out to 7'10" as well as I much prefer a long rod for throwing spinnebaits.

Daiwa just loves IM7 so there is no reason to look into the high modulus blanks unless you want to.

Daiwa doesn't sell blanks 🙂  A while ago I decided to replace all the rods I wanted to upgrade with rods I built.  Not because I couldn't buy what I wanted, but because it's fun and rewarding.

The replaced rods go into the kayak so I always have that ready to go when I want an evening fishing.  I have a smaller set of tackle just for the kayak as well for the same reason.

Thanks for all the feedback on the rods.  I will be getting a 73.  I'll try to remember to post build pictures.

I have to agree on the H vs MH... thats what I been using for 5/8 - 1oz spinner baits.
If you dont like it...there are plenty of other baits to also throw on that rod.

I like composites for kayak rods, they lose little to carbon blanks and add a bunch of durability in any rod position which is a good thing in a kayak. Thrasher rods Magic Wands developed by bass lure designer/rod designer/ custom rod builder to the elite anglers/author Rich Forhan. They will set you up with the right blank and custom cut to your length before delivery at a great price.

My favorite spinnerbait rod is a 6-8 Falcon Lowrider overall and in cases where I need a shorter rod their 6-4 Spinnerbait special. Tried using a Rainshadow MHMF bland and it was too moderate for me but works great for crankbaits.
