michiganoutdoorsman Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 Hi all, My dad is looking for a finesse baitcast setup like the title says. He’s so set in his ways that he can’t learn how to use a spinning setup, no matter how hard I try. He just can’t get used to the feel and he’s set in his ways. Anyone got a rod recommendation for around $100? He doesn’t want to spend a ton as he’s on a fixed income (retired) and would then obviously buy a baitcast reel as well. I’m open to recommendations on that as well. He’s pushing 70 and has been using baitcasters all his life so I guess there’s no changing him now. Thanks for any help!! michiganoutdoorsman Quote
JN94 Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 I just bought an Ark Tharp 6'9" ML for my BFS setup and I like it. I think they retail for ~$120 Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 8, 2024 Super User Posted March 8, 2024 ML Casting rods within your budget are rare. M moderate action will work and widen your selection. Tom 8 minutes ago, Bird said: Dobyns fury ML. Fury 702 Casting rod? DX702C above the OP’s budget. Tom 1 Quote
softwateronly Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 I have a Major Craft Days 6'9 M/RF 2 piece rod that I'm really really happy with. It costs @$135 shipped. The line right below Days is Benkei and costs right at $100 and is worth a close look in my opinion. 6'6 M/R https://www.digitaka.com/item/29/6/5/4560350818114 6'5 ML/RF https://www.digitaka.com/item/29/6/5/4560350818084 scott https://www.majorcraft.co.jp/roditem/4353 Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted March 8, 2024 Super User Posted March 8, 2024 What bottom weights does he use? For a 3/16 or 1/4 oz you could even go up to a medium, something 1/4-5/8 rated. If he’s fishing 1/8 oz on the bottom then you’re going to need to look ML unless he’s throwing heavier worms. I’ve done what you’re talking with a ML/MOD and 8 lb line. It works, but I like a little faster action at that light of power. Quote
Eric 26 Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 @michiganoutdoorsman Although my only medium light casting rod is a crank bait rod I would personally go with a medium power/fast action rod with a softer tip for the above technique’s but that’s just me. Here is a rod/reel combo well within his budget but full disclosure I’ve never held it let alone used it but Bass Pro Shop is currently having their annual spring sale where really good deals can be found. I’m going to include a few different combinations but all are from Bass Pro Shops. 1 Quote
michiganoutdoorsman Posted March 8, 2024 Author Posted March 8, 2024 I appreciate the insight, everyone. I’ll pass some of these along to him and see what he thinks. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 8, 2024 Super User Posted March 8, 2024 I've been happy with a 6'6" ML Carbonlite from BPS. Not a newer one, but paired with a Chronarch 50, I use for all finesse stuff. Spinning is my go-to, tho. 1 Quote
michiganoutdoorsman Posted March 9, 2024 Author Posted March 9, 2024 I think he might try to take advantage of the Cabela’s sale right now! He’s got some gift cards and old rods he wants to turn in. Should get a nice rod for cheap. 2 Quote

The trade in is very specific - you give them rods, they take a set amount off the rod you want to purchase. If the rod you want retails for $100, they take $20 off...and it's a 1-for-1...you give them two rods, they want you to purchase 2 rods at the discount, if you only buy one, it's still the set amount despite you giving them 2. 1 Quote

Right. I know how it works, he bought a rod last year doing the 1 for 1 swap. I personally don’t buy much from Cabela’s these days but he likes to shop around so I go with just to spend time together. I might buy some plastics or terminal tackle while I’m there. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 9, 2024 Super User Posted March 9, 2024 I use both MXF and MLXF for drop shot. It all depends on the weight of the sinker. Quote
Eric 26 Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 @michiganoutdoorsman I’m pretty sure your dad will find something he loves there. They typically sell a few combos at a ridiculously low price at least at my BPS or Cabelas. I’m heading to BPS later on today in fact. Let us know how he does. 1 Quote
