Big difference, you can not catch and release a deer.  Making the drone illegal is not only a fair chase issue, it is also a game management issue.  Same reason modern rifle, seasons in most states, are far shorter than bow seasons.  Success rates are much higher with rifles, so in order to preserve the deer population, seasons are short.  Bow success is very low allowing for longer seasons.

You guys crack me up...."Dominated pre-FFS" about a kid who just turned 19 made me literally laugh out loud.  

 

He's a great angler, with or without tech from all appearances...But simple fact is that he has always had access to it.  It's not his fault and isn't a bad thing, it's just the reality.  I wouldn't bet against him dominating pro tours, but you've got to give him time to build his own career and legacy....I'm sure he will.  Don't try to do it for him as some weird argument defending sonar tech.

@king fisher it was a relative example not comparing apples to apples. You kind of proved my point. If you use drones you’ll see more deer kills. You’ll know exactly where those deer are. Which is the whole point of the FFS. You are casting to fish not blindly. If you use FFS you are seeing bigger bags and more catching. Again it’s allowed so why not use it. The sporting aspect of it is somewhat being taken away which is what people are arguing the most.

I think the comparison to sight fishing is funny - Because the biggest argument to that was so many people would say it's 'not sporting'...Since you can see the fish and pick on it enough to get it to bite.  I don't see the FFS techniques that much differently - Except for the fact that FFS isn't limited by a short seasonal window, eyesight-distances, shallow water, and water clarity.  There are even limits in place around sight fishing - Like you can't use ladders to gain a height advantage - And no one really questions that?  I don't understand the smugness of people who are seemingly OK with all of the other limitations like these, but then look down their nose on anyone who asks, "Hey, maybe this FFS stuff is getting to be a little too much?" I think I know the answer deep down, but will hold off on saying it .  

 

From my perspective, there's got to be some limitation put in place soon - Whether it's limiting transducers, screens, or something else.  It's literally the only thing in tournament bass fishing without a limitation.  

 

I am very much in favor of sight fishing and I have FFS on my boat - Anti flame disclaimers  

If seeing 4-6 transducers, 22" screens and 6-8 monitors on the boats doesn't make a person at least balk at its absurdity , I don't even know what to say.

 

But what restrictions should be placed without disrupting the money flow from sponsors?

The kid has skill, and the way his luck was going, I am positive he would have won that tournament even if he was only allowed to fish with a snoopy rod, no electronics, and barbless hooks.  He also would have won if ilt was allowed to used electronics made by NASA, and dynamite.  He would  have been the best dynamite thrower in the tournament.  It was his time, he deserves the credit.  Like everyone, he will stumble and have bad days.  Some days nothing can go wrong and others, nothing can go right.  Only time will tell if he can handle both with humility and grace.  Right now he should celebrate, and everyone else should celebrate with him.  For the record, I do not recommend making dynamite a legal method to catch bass.  I have enough problems keeping my body intact without playing with explosives.

Trey is a friggin real deal monster who just beat everyone that has mattered for the past 10 years heavy handedly.  It didn't look like he was playing video games.  It looked like he was dialed in and doing it better than anyone else in the competition.  YMMV

 

Congratulations are indeed in order and it is his time right now.

At least his electronics are paid off now. His next win will pay his boat off.  Sadly seems like he has a long way to go to actually make money off the winnings. I hope he does win again and I hope he continues to kill it. Most people don’t get to live their dreams especially  at 19

He’s been holding large cardboard checks for at least 6 years now . It ain’t none of our business how much money other people have

Who cares?  Is it unethical for parents to do everything they can to help their kids succeed, at whatever goals they choose to pursue?  Would you ask a surgeon, how he got his money for medical school, a pilot how he could afford to build time in planes, or a race car driver if his father taught him how to drive.  Most parents will do everything they can to help there children succeed.  Some have the means to do more than others, but you can't blame the kid for having caring parents with a high income.  If he takes what his parents have been able to give him, and turns that in to a fantastic career, I applaud, both the parents and the kid.

@TnRiver46 no I’m actually not. I’m making the argument he’s doing good for himself in a sport that is hard to cash checks. In the end he maybe one of the few that could make it on winnings alone. You just won’t take your tunnel vision off and think everyone is attacking him.

Youth is a gift we old farts would love to have.

18 years old is a young adult old enough to serve your country in the military, drive cars etc. why do you all think Trey is too young to win a major tournament?

When I was 18 had at least 2 years experience catching DD size bass, hunting deer and water fowl, driving race cars and boats etc.

Todays youth grow up learning how to use computers, why wouldn’t they be advanced using this technology?

Stop whining and start cheering we have young angers dominating our sport, it’s what we need to carry it on.

Trey McKinney fished a brilliant tournament. Each & every day. He was in the zone he needed to win such an event. 
 

FFS isn’t a be all win all gadget. As an aside, when Rick Clunn won the tournament on the Harris chain , he was in contention on the final day. He was behind and he knew he was going to need bigger fish, he reviewed his mental notes (not FFS) and realized that his biggest bites had come on his 3/4 ounce spinner bait.. he committed to it all day, the final day and won the tournament again! (2016&2019) FFS will never supplant this way of fishing. 
 

FFS is a good tool, especially during prespawn when fish are staged like we saw during Toledo Bend, it seems some guys are gonna live and die by it though, kinda like Hackney and flipping 😂

There have been an inordinate number of changes throughout my life.  Most of which I had little to no control over.  The ones I liked, I embraced. The ones I didn't care for, I usually complained about.  Never made a bit of difference one way or the other.  Seems in the end, things turn out best for folks who make the best out of the way things turn out.  Either way, I strive to preserve, relentlessly.
